About Bruce

Bio

I love working with students in small groups or individually, since that's where real learning takes place. Every student is different, so I work hard to recognize where you need to spend time, have additional discussion, or work things out for yourself. I understand that patience and listening are just as important to your learning as my talking and demonstrating. I think it's important for the student to take the lead in learning discussions; you're the one learning the material!

I don't think that 'drilling' is a useful way to spend time with an expert; you can memorize on your own. My goal is to help you understand material, get a feel for why things make sense, and learn to ask (and answer) the right questions. It's more useful to design exams together and answer your questions than to attempt to memorize previous ones. My focus will always be on guiding you to work through problems and helping you understand correct answers than delivering things-to-know.

Biology is fascinating; understanding it should be a joy and mastering it should be fun. But all of this can only be achieved through thinking about how things work and why the facts are as they are.

I've spent 30 years working with students in classrooms, small groups, and office hours. I've spent those decades thinking about what is important to understand and how to transition students from newcomers to experts. I take pride in doing teaching where students learn through thinking about good questions, exploring ideas, and working on their own and in small groups.

I have also built a large number of software tools that students can use on their own both to practice understanding and to work on 'the dull stuff' (vocabulary!) that is nonetheless essential. If you work with me, these will be available for free as part of your learning opportunity.

I deeply enjoy sharing an understanding of genetics and biology with interested learners. Doing well on tests and homework can be achieved by understanding how things work and why they work that way... this approach is not only more fun; it's more efficient and effective. I'm also experienced in writing letters of recommendation for your next step!

Concepts from the following areas are where I am a strong tutor and guide:

Scientific method, designing and interpreting studies & experiments
Chemistry underlying biology (water, hydrophobicity, partial charges, hydrogen bonds)
Key molecules: DNA, RNA, protein
Cellular machines--big (organelles such as mitochondrion, ER, Golgi) and small (enzymes); what they do, how they work
Key processes: Transcription (and regulation), replication, translation
Energetics: (ATP, respiration, photosynthesis)
Genetics: Mendel and his findings, exceptions to Mendel including linkage, X-linkage
Division of genetic material: DNA replication, Mitosis, Meiosis
Techniques: DNA sequencing, PCR, detecting nucleic acids and proteins
Evolution: Arguments and evidence

Genetics

I have taught upper and lower division genetics courses at the University of Arizona in the previous 20 years, most often as sole instructor. My Ph.D. work at U. Cal. San Francisco involved genetics research, as did my postdoctoral work and my work as an independent investigator. First author publications resulted from each level. I design software for genetics learning that is currently or recently in use at the University of Arizona, the University of Georgia, and free online.

Great tutor

Bruce taught my daughter 9th grade honors biology. During this time (weekly lessons for one semester) she was able to raise her grade from a low C to an A! What more can you ask for from a tutor? Besides Bruce is a highly responsible person and is very easy to communicate with. Highly recommended for those who are looking to drastically improve their results. Thank you, Bruce.

Great AP biology tutor

Bruce guides my daughter so she can reach conclusions on her own, helping her to better understand the material. His lessons make her much more confident in the subject material and have increased her interest in biology. He's been a great help! Cathy M.

Great Genetics tutor

Great tutor! He knows so much about genetics and broke down the concepts so that I could understand clearly. He worked out numerous problems and explained them to me!

Great lesson.

I heard from my son that it was a good discussion. Bruce was patient in answering all questions, listens carefully, and gave good examples and counter examples to help understand the concepts.

Knowledgeable, enthusiastic and fun.

My son needed some help with AP Bio. By the end of the first session, my son felt much clearer on the topics discussed and his confidence in his ability to handle those topics in class was strong. He felt that the hour was highly productive and he is eager to have Bruce return again.
