My love for Arabic instruction comes from my love for the language. This passion has led me to pursue a PhD in Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. The intense linguistic component of this course of study has taught me the importance of diligence and consistency in language study. I hope to bring others the joy of learning this ancient and rich language which while challenging, is attainable for anyone.
Throughout college and graduate school, I have been regularly approached by other students seeking guidance on learning Arabic. I hope that through tutoring, I can help others along this challenging but rewarding path. I recognize that people learn languages for different reasons and with different goals. Let's work to together to help you accomplish yours.
Both my undergraduate and master's programs centered around Middle Eastern studies, with a particular focus on the Arabic language and its literature. Additionally, this course of study allowed me to spend nine months in Fez, Morocco, studying Arabic literature at the Arabic Language Institute in Fez. As such, I specialize in Modern Standard and Classical Arabic. In addition to tutoring, I have experience in research and translation at the graduate level.
Please contact me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you learn Arabic. My love for Arabic instruction comes from my love for the language. I had a really great experience with Joshua. He is very knowledgeable about Arabic and is a really good teacher- patient and makes an effort to effectively tailor lessons to your specific interests and abilities.
Joshua is helping my son with his Arabic study and is very patient and understanding of the difficulties associated with learning the language. He approaches the study in a very organized way and helps him find the answers to his questions. His teachers have already commented on the improvement in his speaking and writing. I would highly recommend him as a tutor!
Great command of the language and able to quickly sense both your strengths and areas in need of improvement. Excellent at breaking things down into very digestible explanations and examples.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a B.A. and M.A. from Brandeis University in Islamic and Middle Eastern studies and Near Eastern and Judaic studies respectively. My research, particularly at the graduate level, has focused on the Arabic language and its literary varieties. I have lived in the Arabic-speaking world for a year (cumulatively) and speak and read at a near native level. I have helped other students while in school, wish to reach out beyond campus and tutor professionally. While I do not have previous formal tutoring experience, I can provide references to my ability and experience in the target language and aptitude for this work.
I began my formal study of Hebrew in during the course of my undergraduate studies and have continued into my doctoral program at Princeton University. My research requires me to regularly use academic articles written in Hebrew and consult with Israeli peers, and beyond my research, I have studied and continue to study modern Hebrew literature. Due to this experience working in Hebrew, I can help students gain comfort and fluency in the modern spoken language, as well as reading academic, literary, and media sources.
