About Amy

Challenging oneself academically is not about becoming better than your peers, but becoming your own best self. As someone who benefited from tutoring services during college at Eastern University and then went on to tutor her peers, I am pleased to be offering tutoring to those in my community through Wyzant. Tutoring is one of the keys to improving our education system by offering the one-on-one or small group support that is often difficult to find in schools.

I completed all but two classes in the Spanish major during college. I have been studying Spanish for 9 years and spent 5 months (July-December 2013) in Cordoba, Argentina with an immersion program. I am a certified community interpreter through Penn State Abington and work directly with the Latino population, speaking Spanish in casual and professional environments for the past 18 months. My connections with the Latino community sparked my interest in teaching English in TESOL/ESL environments. My passion for language inspires me to challenge others to learn more in order to connect more with their communities and other people groups around the globe.

My work with ESL/ESOL is ongoing as I complete my Master of Education TESOL in August 2016. I work for an English language school in Philadelphia and volunteer to teach a group of adult immigrants once per week. During my time abroad in Argentina, I was a group leader for a conversational English group.

I believe in teaching practical themed vocabulary enriched with grammatical concepts. I encourage questions and spending maximum time engaging in speaking activities. Writing and reading are also important concepts integrated into lessons, especially as the student has more ability to read and write.

While my experience is primarily with adults and college-age students, I welcome high school aged students as well.

Spanish was the first forte I found. I began studying Spanish in 2006 and strived to be the best in my class throughout high school and college. My college experience took me abroad, with equipped me with the language skills to work full time with Spanish speakers in the USA. I believe in oral practice as the best way to learn and discover new vocabulary. Writing and reading reinforce the concepts learned, and give ample opportunities to discuss grammatical concepts. I have experience with a variety of dialects and cultural differences amidst Latin American cultures.

Are you looking to be your best self, improve your spoken English or Spanish, and more fully engage with a wide range of people in your community? Let's partner today. I will do my best to be in contact with you within one or two business days. Thank you! Gracias!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
