About Emily

As a Writing Center tutor at the graduate level, with additional experience as a teacher's assistant and research assistant at the university level and a variety of editing experience (scholarly book chapters, an article for a non-profit, and young adult novellas), I am an excellent tutor for your writing and language arts quandaries. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballroom Dancing

I took two years of ballroom dancing lessons in high school and was one of the best in the class. I danced the lead role in my high school's musical production my senior year. I also took swing dancing lessons in college and was twice selected for the swing club's performance team.

Bible Studies

I am an M.Div. candidate at Princeton Theological Seminary and have a minor in Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University. I have taken in-depth courses in both Old and New Testaments; some include "Exegesis of John," "Honors Exodus and Deuteronomy," "Honors Hebrew Poetical and Wisdom Literature," and "Romans and Galatians." I received grades of A or A- in all nine Bible classes, at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

Geography

Want to learn geography from someone with firsthand knowledge? Besides studying geography in school to get the facts and figures, I have lived overseas for more than 13 years and can share stories and history to help you remember all those places and flags. I also have three years' experience working with international students at university, learning the customs and culture of their home countries. My favorite countries? India, Chad, Belgium, and England!

Proofreading

As the General Editor of a student-run, peer-reviewed academic journal, my proofreading and copy editing skills are quite literally publication worthy. I am also a writing tutor for Master's-level students, and I frequently proofread the papers of my colleagues. I am particularly fluent in Chicago/Turabian and SBL citation styles.

Religion

I am an M.Div. student at Princeton Theological Seminary, and I have a B.A. in Christian Ministries with a minor in Biblical Studies. I have taken classes in world religions, theology, church history, philosophy, and anthropology. I was a TA for an undergraduate course in Practical Theology and a Research Assistant to another Practical Theology professor. In addition, I have spent a significant amount of time overseas (especially in Africa) and have first-hand knowledge of Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.

Theatre

I have performed and assisted backstage with five high school and community youth theatre productions to date. I took mime and improv classes in high school and an "Introduction to Theatre" class at university. I played the female leads in "The Mouse That Roared" and "The Promenade" during my junior and senior years of high school, respectively. For those performances, I received the award for Artistic Expression in Drama, becoming the only student ever to get the award two years in a row.

Writing

I am the General Editor of a student-run academic journal and am charged with making every article publication-worthy. I am also a Writing Center tutor for Master's students in my program. As a research assistant to a university professor, I edited academic book chapters for organization and content. I have also edited two young adult novellas and a scholarly article for a non-profit. I earned a 5 on the AP English Language exam and scored in the 93rd percentile on the GRE Analytic Writing section.

Emily is a great tutor — Emily has taught my daughter so much during her time as her tutor. My daughter originally did not understand how to properly form essays, proper grammar, and also lacked the ability to fully analyze and answer prompts given to her. Thanks to Emily, she has improved a lot in her writing. This tutor is very helpful and is flexible in her lessons depending on what you need the most help on. She e ...
