Bio

After having spent two years working in a church community in an area of Germany where the general population's facility in English is very low, I know the importance of developing strong communicative skills in a foreign language so that one does not have to rely on English as a kind of safety-net. My work in Germany consisted almost exclusively of preaching and teaching, so there was no way of getting around developing a high proficiency in relation to grammar and vividness of expression....

After having spent two years working in a church community in an area of Germany where the general population's facility in English is very low, I know the importance of developing strong communicative skills in a foreign language so that one does not have to rely on English as a kind of safety-net. My work in Germany consisted almost exclusively of preaching and teaching, so there was no way of getting around developing a high proficiency in relation to grammar and vividness of expression.

The difficulties of having had to teach myself the language turned out to be an advantage in the long-run, as I was forced to think my way through the logic and character of the language and to experiment with different learning methods in order to arrive at a point where I truly "got it". As opposed to having a merely cognitive overview of grammatical paradigms, I "know" this language (Nicht bloss: ich kann, sondern: ich kenne diese Sprache). The auto-didactic route, however, may not be your cup of tea, and if that's the case, I would love to help you improve your German skills.

I hold the students whom I tutor to a high standard, simply out of love for the subject matter, concern for the student's developing abilities, and the realization that there are no grades in life. One either can use a given skill well, or not. That is also the reason why I want to be as hands-on as possible during my tutoring hours. It's idealistic to think that one can entirely avoid deductive methods, but the goal is certainly always to reach proficiency in real-life situations and to put your skills to use.

If you're interested, feel free to contact me and we can discuss things further!
