About Valerie

I am a former Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) with the JET Programme. I have 5 years of teaching experience in Japan in beautiful Toyama Prefecture. My experience is specifically with high school students aged 15 to 18 in the classroom. I have made my own worksheets and exams for students in that age range. I have also tutored for the STEP Eiken exam there. Outside the classroom, I have volunteered for English chat with younger children as well as adults. As part of my teaching experience, I have also trained students for English speech contests.

I am also capable of tutoring for elementary to intermediate level Japanese. I studied Japanese language through all four years of undergrad and learned even more in my time living in Japan. I have passed the JLPT 2.

I am available for English chat or Japanese chat as well. This is for those who don't want classroom-type help but want to retain their language skills. Chat lessons teach colloquial speech by using real articles and media (drama, music, etc).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I used to be a Production Assistant for comic books, and used Photoshop to edit images. I helped newer employees at that time navigate the tools they needed for the job. Available for beginner lessons!

Chinese

I come from a Chinese-American family and am proficient in oral communication in Mandarin. I went to Chinese school on the weekends where we used the Taiwanese zhuyin fuhao system for learning traditional Chinese characters. Later in high school and college, I learned the pinyin system. If you would like to learn elementary Chinese, I can help with sentence structure, pronunciation, and reading/writing.

English

I have taught for five years with the JET Programme as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT).

ESL/ESOL

I taught English as an Assistant Language Teacher for 5 years in Japan.

Grammar

I took a TEFL course while teaching English abroad and grammar was one of the many topics that was covered. In teaching, I make my own worksheets for students to find the grammar mistakes. In my experience, using drills helps the most in teaching grammar.

Handwriting

I was an English teacher for 5 years in Japan. We taught the students how to properly write in both lower-case and upper-case English. We also taught them how to write in script. Students already have their own lined paper to write with, otherwise we provided them with our own dotted practice sheets so they wrote proportional letters.

Japanese

I studied the Japanese language for all four years of my undergraduate education and lived in Japan for five years. I have passed the JLPT Level 2.

Literature

I was a minor in English Literature at university and enjoyed reading classics very much during that time.

Microsoft Word

I have used Word since my elementary school days and still use it today for lessons. I am proficient in both the English and Japanese versions of Microsoft Word.

Phonics

I was an English as a second language teacher in Japan for 5 years. Japanese language does not have all the sounds necessary for speaking English so phonics tricks were taught at the beginning of oral communication lessons. In particular, 'L' and 'R' sounds are difficult so it was important to incorporate differences between such words (rice/lice, right/light). Drawings of the position of lips/tongue/teeth were provided to help students understand visually as well.

Proofreading

As an assistant language teacher for English in Japan, I had to read and mark essays and exams for my classes.

Reading

Aside from the fact that I enjoy reading, I taught English in Japan for 5 years. First year students in my school often read abridged versions of American and British classics. I used to prepare reading comprehension questions for these assignments.

TOEFL

I have helped Japanese students prepare for the TOEFL exam and other exams like it. On a more personal level, when my cousin from another country was studying for this exam, I was there to help him.

Vocabulary

I taught English in Japan for 5 years. Vocabulary lists were often used in my classes. I highly recommend flashcards for memorizing new words.
