I retired from teaching after 30 years in an elementary school in California. There have been many trends and new ideas throughout the years and I have worked through them all! I have extensive experience with English Language Learners and have taught in primary and upper grades.
In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I have tutored small groups and in one-on-one settings. I coached older students for the county pentathlon and worked with 7 year olds teaching their parents English. For one year, I home schooled a seriously ill 1st grader. I've done it all!
I was extensively trained in Common Core Standards for two years prior to implementation and used them rigorously for the 3 years that followed.
My tutoring philosophy is the same no matter the age of the student....make them feel comfortable to stretch their thinking muscles and push them only as hard as I know they can. And have a bit of fun so they are happy with their success!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was extensively trained for 2 years in Common Core Standards before implementation and taught rigorously for the 3 years that followed. I did after school tutoring for my last 3 years as well. My methods are centered around critical thinking to build confidence for the independence needed to tackle the standards and tasks.
I have a multiple subjects credential for the past 32 years and was a full time teacher for 30 years. I taught both primary and upper grades at a primarily ELL site. I also substituted for one year in all grades and various school populations.
I home schooled a seriously ill first grader for one year. He was behind in his skills so I benefited from the one-on-one time to use Common Core materials to boost his abilities. His motivation was high..so I challenged him and built his confidence. I retired from teaching after 30 years in an elementary school in California.
As an adjunct duty, I coached the 4-6 Pentathalon team for the county competition. It was an intense after-school program in study skills to give them an edge when studying at home. I also did tutoring in study skills every year to prepare all applicable students for standardized testing.
