I have 17 years of experience tutoring both privately, as well as for Talent Development Center in Plainsboro, New Jersey. I specialize in math from Kindergarten - 8th grade (up to Algebra I) levels. I am equally experienced teaching weak students as well as gifted ones.
In addition, I prepare students for Accelerated and Enriched program (for gifted kids in the West Windsor-Plainsboro school district), as well as standardized and placement tests. I use a variety of materials and customize each lesson for the specific needs of the student. I do not do group lessons as I believe each child deserves my undivided attention while he or she is with me. Most of my students get into advanced and gifted programs, and all show significant improvement in knowledge, skills, and grades. The parents of all my students report that their child's confidence grows. In fact, none of my students required tutors in high school, since their foundation became strong enough to allow them to succeed throughout their academic career.
Besides simply "tutoring" the child in the math topic, I also teach them problem solving and critical thinking skills, which are often not developed fully by the school programs. Through extensive real world application type problems, I encourage my students to think outside the box and apply their knowledge to new situations. These skills are necessary not only for math, but for all subject areas and future careers. In addition, I also help students develop study skills through independent study of a lesson, using a very comprehensive textbook. The student must read through the lesson, complete the problems, and then explain to me what they learned. This is another crucial skill that will follow them for the rest of their academic career.
My students love coming to my lessons and almost all stay with me for 3-5 years. I genuinely love my students, and I believe in each of them. But more importantly, I make them believe in themselves. Besides using appropriate material which helps develop understanding of difficult math concepts with simple explanations, I believe there is something about the balance of my personality which helps them succeed. The fusion of affection, strictness, and high expectations, as well as support and understanding for each child, helps me encourage my students to reach and surpass their own goals.
