About Asya

I have 17 years of experience tutoring both privately, as well as for Talent Development Center in Plainsboro, New Jersey. I specialize in math from Kindergarten - 8th grade (up to Algebra I) levels. I am equally experienced teaching weak students as well as gifted ones.

In addition, I prepare students for Accelerated and Enriched program (for gifted kids in the West Windsor-Plainsboro school district), as well as standardized and placement tests. I use a variety of materials and customize each lesson for the specific needs of the student. I do not do group lessons as I believe each child deserves my undivided attention while he or she is with me. Most of my students get into advanced and gifted programs, and all show significant improvement in knowledge, skills, and grades. The parents of all my students report that their child's confidence grows. In fact, none of my students required tutors in high school, since their foundation became strong enough to allow them to succeed throughout their academic career.

Besides simply "tutoring" the child in the math topic, I also teach them problem solving and critical thinking skills, which are often not developed fully by the school programs. Through extensive real world application type problems, I encourage my students to think outside the box and apply their knowledge to new situations. These skills are necessary not only for math, but for all subject areas and future careers. In addition, I also help students develop study skills through independent study of a lesson, using a very comprehensive textbook. The student must read through the lesson, complete the problems, and then explain to me what they learned. This is another crucial skill that will follow them for the rest of their academic career.

My students love coming to my lessons and almost all stay with me for 3-5 years. I genuinely love my students, and I believe in each of them. But more importantly, I make them believe in themselves. Besides using appropriate material which helps develop understanding of difficult math concepts with simple explanations, I believe there is something about the balance of my personality which helps them succeed. The fusion of affection, strictness, and high expectations, as well as support and understanding for each child, helps me encourage my students to reach and surpass their own goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

For Algebra 1, aside from just teaching algebraic skills, I focus a lot on problem solving and critical thinking using algebraic methods. These skills are often not developed fully by the school programs. Through extensive real-world application problems, I encourage my students to think outside the box and apply their knowledge to new situations. These skills are necessary not only for math, but for all subject areas and future careers.

Another crucial skill that will follow them for the rest of their academic career is teaching students how to develop study skills through independent study. Using a very comprehensive textbook, I have the student read through a lesson, complete the problems, and then explain to me what they learned. Afterwards, we go over the concepts together, in order to make sure the student understands everything clearly.

The parents of all of my students report that their child's confidence grows. In fact, none of my students required math tutors in high school, since their foundation becomes strong enough to allow them to succeed throughout their academic career.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught over 100 students in grades K-6th, ranging from really weak and unmotivated kids to strong, gifted and passionate ones. By teaching students from different school districts, I have discovered what knowledge a student needs to have mastered to excel in his/her math class each year. I have a variety of excellent sources for material spanning from school-necessary topics to extra, challenging problems for those ready and willing to exceed past the school syllabus. I have used all of my materials with many different-leveled students and was able to increase their knowledge while sparking their interest in math.

Prealgebra

I have been teaching Pre-algebra for over 17 years, and I believe it is extremely important to master certain concepts at this level before moving on to Algebra.

As part of my methodology, I teach students the skill of using a textbook to learn new topics on their own. Although my students come from excellent public and private schools, they are, unfortunately, not taught this critical skill there.

With less challenging topics, I sometimes ask my students to learn as much as possible from the textbook on their. Afterwards, we go over the concepts together to clarify and reinforce their understanding and remove any possible misconceptions. This is one small but key part of my process.

In addition to teaching both content and knowledge acquisition skills, I expose my students to a wide array of material in order to create a deep understanding of Pre-algebra. My students are exposed to a variety of angles and contexts so they develop a solid foundation for their future mathematical education.
