I have been teaching Latin for 11 years at a New Jersey Public High School and am certified in the state of New Jersey. I tutor one-to-one because it gives students an opportunity to gain experience with the language from a classroom teacher.
I use Hans Orberg's Lingua Latina: Familia Romana in my classroom combined with an active method - i.e., reading, writing, speaking, listening - and teach levels I through AP. I have, however, used Ecce Romani, Cambridge Latin, Oxford Latin, Latin for Americans, and Jenny at various times and can support these texts. I follow the 2009 New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards in my classroom with modifications necessary to teaching the Classical languages as set out by the American Classical Association. Greg is very knowledgeable and thorough in his teaching. I felt comfortable asking questions and I could understand what he was teaching me. He helped me to focus on what I needed to study.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
