I have been teaching for the past 19 years and have been teaching in the same district for 18 of those years. Currently, I am employed as an 8th grade English teacher. However, I have experience teaching both 6th and 7th grade. Additionally, I have tutored High School English students for both SAT prep as well as supplemental instruction for academic classes. I have also worked with elementary school aged children teaching Reading Recovery--a program created to assist emerging readers with basic reading and comprehension strategies. Furthermore, I am adept at teaching writing skills on all academic levels and enjoy teaching writing strategies to students that are engaging and can meet specific needs.
I enjoy tutoring as I find working one on one with students best accommodates individualized instruction and is an effective way of assessing learning goals. Moreover, I find that tutoring also benefits me professionally as it reinforces my abilities as a teacher and allows me to develop teaching styles that can accommodate a variety of learners. I understand the importance of communicating with families so that students can have continued success beyond the interventions and strategies implemented during tutoring sessions.
I have a Master's degree in Reading and English Education. I am also skilled at teaching literature and analysis as well as public speaking. I am a writer myself so I am constantly improving my own writing skills and feel that my own achievements as a writer aid me in the teaching of others.
I am available during the week after school hours and have a more open schedule during the summer. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a unique educational experience in that I have a theatre degree in addition to an English degree; this is beneficial in assisting students with public speaking as I am skilled at teaching vocal technique in conjunction with appropriate physicality. As an English teacher, I focus on public speaking once a marking period with all of my students. I understand that some students are hesitant to speak in front of others and am good at helping students overcome their fears of public speaking and gain confidence in their abilities.
I have taught English for the past 18 years and have taught a wide spectrum of ages and abilities. I am an enthusiastic reader myself and am good at engaging students in reading as well as assessing and identifying individual needs.
