My experience includes 2.5 years as a Lead Tutor at a liberal arts college writing center and 1 year as a graduate student writing tutor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In my current job, I use Excel daily to manage databases and create descriptive reports. Throughout my social sciences education, I used several versions of Excel on a yearly basis.
I easily use Word and its features to write papers, review and revise others' work, create reports and publications, and manage documents for given projects. I am familiar with many of the features of older and current versions of the software.
In my current position, I use Microsoft Word on a daily basis for projects and document management. Microsoft Word was the sole word processing software I used throughout my undergraduate and graduate education.
After years of excelling at editing and revising in grammar school and in college, I am now the resident editor at my place of employment. I am well-versed in common grammar and syntax errors and an excellent speller. As a writing tutor with over 3 years of experience, I am well-versed at picking up errors in students' writing and working with them to identify repetitive errors and ways to improve the flow and polish of writing.
I have experience taking - and studying the content of - standardized exams including the PSAT, SAT, and GRE. I took the PSAT in 2006 and was a National Merit Commended Student. In addition to being familiar with the process involved with and content of the PSAT/SAT tests, I recently taught two sections of a college orientation course that focused on areas including the development of test-taking and study skills.
I took the SAT Writing in 2007 and scored a 750. For my entire educational career, writing has been my strong suit. As a writing tutor, proofreader, and humanities/social sciences enthusiast, I have developed an ability to write analytically, clearly, and strongly.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 2011, graduating with Honors for successful defense of my undergraduate thesis focusing on social actors' construction of narratives of gendered experience and participation in gendered communities. After my undergraduate education, I graduated from Lehigh University's Community Fellows program with a Master of Arts in Sociology. My coursework has included quantitative and qualitative methods, research design, social theory, and the sociology of health/medicine, sex/gender, and race/ethnicity.
I recently taught two sections of a semester long college orientation course at the community college level. The course aims to introduce students (many of whom are new to - or reacclimating to - the college environment) to study skills and strategies for academic success in all courses. Topics I have covered with students include: critical reading/writing/thinking, organization, identifying and using educational resources, exam preparation, building an individual study plan, and strategies for groupwork/teamwork.
This is my strongest skill and the one I am most enthusiastic about working on with others! I have experience working with students on areas such as grammar/spelling; organization; thesis statement development; clarity; researching and incorporating sources; and refinement of resumes, cover letters, and personal statements.
My educational and professional experience with writing/writing tutoring includes: graduation from a writing-intensive liberal arts undergraduate curriculum; 2.5 years of experience as a Lead Tutor at the Muhlenberg College Writing Center, working with students on all aspects of their writing in all disciplines; a year of focused one-on-one writing tutoring with a Lehigh undergraduate student; the completion of an argument-driven, researched, and organized honors thesis; and professional experience producing written work for reports and publications.
