My special joy is teaching students how to learn. I tutored remedial English grammar and writing skills to students at Essex County College in Newark, New Jersey, for two years. In Perth Amboy, I taught catechism lessons to first and fourth graders. As a substitute, I also taught ESL and GED classes at the Adult School in Perth Amboy. In New York, I worked as a proofreader for Human Sciences Press which published scholarly journals. I also worked as a proofreader for the Dreyfus Corporation in Manhattan and as an editorial assistant for the magazine of the New York CPA Society. My Bachelor's degree is in English Literature from The College of New Jersey.
I presently work as a freelance correspondent at diocesan and national newspapers and I am a novelist.
I assess the needs of my students and then find appropriate teaching materials to augment my tutoring skills. Building upon their assignments from class, I seek to teach problem areas with patience. I encourage my students with praise for their achievements. It is my belief that students need to be encouraged to learn, and I devote my time to supporting them in their goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught children in Elementary School (4th-8th) as a substitute teacher at a private area elementary school. I taught Elementary(K-12) students as a substitute teacher for the Perth Amboy School System. As a catechist at an area church, I taught first and fourth graders. I am patient with my students and encourage them to have confidence in their abilities.
I tutored English grammar and writing in a remedial education program at Essex County College in Newark. My major was English literature at The College of New Jersey. I had to write many papers in this capacity. My knowledge of English grammar was necessary in order for me to be able to do so.
My Bachelor of Arts degree in English is from The College Of New Jersey. As part of my curriculum, I studied Voice and Diction and Linguistics.
For three years, I implemented phonics while tutoring Reading in a remedial education program at Essex County College and while tutoring grade school children. I help each student to use the rules of phonics to sound out words.
I worked as a proofreader for the following companies located in Manhattan: Human Sciences Press, the Dreyfus Corporation, and The New State Society of CPAs.
