William Paterson University (Elementary Education)
I am a professional who graduated from William Paterson University with a degree in elementary education and psychology. I completed my practicum and student teaching in the Paterson Public School system. I also was a first/second grade teacher with the 'Learn It Program', which is an after school program that tutors children in math and English.
In helping the students participate in their learning experience, you must make teaching interactive. Students should play a role in their understanding of the new information that you will be giving to them. Using visual keys can help with this interactive way of learning. Some examples are using blocks to help teach them how to add and subtract; or maybe even dressing up to take them back in time for a quick glimpse into history.
As a educator that believes in progressivism, which is based on the belief that education should be child-centered rather than focused on the teacher or the subject area, John Dewey states it best by saying “education is a social process; education is growth; education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself.” I am a professional who graduated from William Paterson University with a degree in elementary education and psychology. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
