I have been working in the school district for the past year as a Math tutor and a substitute teacher. I have been a math tutor to students from the elementary grade level all the way up to high school seniors. I really love working with students and helping them excel in Math. I know Math can be a very scary subject for some students, but based on my experience this past year I feel I can put students at ease when it comes to math and help them learn in a fun way. I have a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Purdue University. I have 16 years' corporate work experience. I came across an opportunity to work in my daughter's schools district last year. That's when I started subbing and also became an AVID Math tutor. And I have enjoyed it so much that I want to continue pursuing tutoring.
My main function as an AVID Math tutor was to teach students how to go about approaching the problem if they didn't know the answer. Part of being an AVID tutor is to teach students analytical thinking and problem solving approaches. I would also conduct mini-lesson plans to teach how to take organized notes in class, efficient study habits, and overall college readiness for the older students. For my elementary school students I would try to make learning fun. After teaching a lesson I would play math games with the students to help reinforce the lesson we learned. I truly believe that enabling a student on how to go about solving a problem they don't know is more beneficial than just giving them the answer. My approach to tutoring Math will help the students think analytically as to how to go about solving the problem - not just memorizing multiplication tables or math formulas.
I feel that based on my experience working as an AVID Tutor and a substitute teacher I would be a great tutor to any student. I have a lot of patience and truly enjoy teaching math. I also understand how math can be difficult for some students and I totally empathize because I have been in their shoes as a student myself. I feel based on my own personal experience with learning math as a student as well as my professional experience I would make a good tutor. Dear Parent/Student,

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
