About Jeffrey

I have taught both chemistry and genetics at Basking Ridge High School for 3 years now (one of the top ranking schools in the state and country) after completing my degree in Biochemistry at Ramapo College of New Jersey. If you are struggling with your chemistry or your math, I'm your man. I really enjoy working with students and teaching is my passion.

I have worked as a tutor as well as a teaching assistant in the past and I have a lot of experience working with kids. First, I like to find out what exactly the student is struggling with. I found out which concepts specifically they are not understanding. Then, I like to explain the concept in a few different ways and simplify it so that it makes sense. Finally, I do problems with my students making sure that the skill has been properly locked in. I allow the students to practice the work on their own and together we work on what parts they need the help with. My emphasis is on the student leaving the session being able to do the problems entirely by themselves once they have understood. Often times, students perform well with a tutor and then they struggle once the tutor leaves. I emphasize building the student up to independence. You do not need to feel helpless anymore!
I am very strong in algebra and other maths because I had to use a lot of them attaining my biochemistry degree. As far as chemistry, my college work included organic chemistry, analytical, biochemistry, fundamentals, and more. I would be glad to help college students in addition to high school students.

I am available weekdays from 4 pm on and all day on the weekends. I am also willing to meet at your place of residence (only with parents present), a local library, or wherever you are most comfortable.
My tutoring methods are relaxed, but informative and I look forward to meeting you and/or your student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have used extensive algebra in pursuit of my biochemistry degree and am very confident in the subject. When I first learned algebra, I did not have a good teacher and I struggled. Now I am proud to say that I have mastered it, but also have the perspective of what it means to struggle in it.

As a biochemistry major, I learned a great deal of not only chemistry, but also biology. Specifically, aspects of DNA are my specialty, but I am happy to help with any other needs of a student.

My chemistry background from college ranges far from fundamentals of chemistry, to biochemistry, to analytical, and more. I know a great deal about many different chemistry fields. My love for the subject and helping other people is what drives me to teach high school chemistry.

Elementary Math

I really enjoy working with kids as well as math in general. I would use concepts that the student can relate to and help break down the subject into easier pieces that can be well understood.

This is my third year teaching genetics as an elective class at Basking Ridge High School. It is a full year course which I have studied thoroughly and designed the curriculum for.

Prealgebra is very important on the road to taking algebra the following year. I can help students prepare for that so that the algebra comes to them relatively easily. I know from experience that being unprepared for algebra is not fun.
