I have been teaching and tutoring EFL to students of all the stages and ages for about thirty years now. My experience in the field has helped a lot of students to perform well in learning English for different purposes and in getting high scores in their exams. These results have not been accidentally reached but through diligent and persistent work in tracing the causes of and the reasons for the factors that may hinder or hamper students' abilities to learn the language. So, it is the teaching/learning challenges that renew my interest and creativity in tutoring not to mention its positive consequences including students' success or materialistic revenue.

I have been noticing that while students can be fairly good at some language skills especially receptive skills (listening and reading), their performances in productive skills (speaking and writing) have always been comparatively problematic to many of them. This does not mean at all that students have been able to master the two receptive skills. Besides the bad habits of reading loudly and trying to translate each word they listen or read, they think in their mother tongue which has also badly affected their productive skills. Thinking in their mother tongue when receiving or producing a foreign language can also result in a problem known as language interference which can confuse students' understanding of the language they learn, hence thwarting their learning.

However, these two challenges were not insurmountable. Reading in methodologies of teaching and learning English and being well oriented with the cultural differences of the two languages have been the key factors of vanquishing these challenges. Teaching students to concentrate on the ideas they want to express (and/or to think in English), besides knowing the language cultures and pinpointing the areas of language interference and how this interference thwarts their learning of English, has much assisted my students to get over a lot of learning challenges of the English language.
