As someone who has a strong analytical aptitude, I knew from an early age that I wanted to pursue a career in engineering. Now that I have been in engineering for over 30 years, I truly appreciate the value of math and science to help solve problems. Regardless of whether you are interested in pursuing a career in a technical field, it's clear that a strong knowledge of math is important because it gives you many options in your career choices in today's world.
I have a passion for math and other technical subjects, and believe my best qualities as a tutor are my patience, listening skills, preparation and persistence. I get great enjoyment seeing the light bulb going off over a student's head when they grasp a concept that had previously eluded them. I have previous experience tutoring students at the middle school and high school level.
Engineering is a field that requires a strong dose of math and science courses. I have expertise in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalc, and calculus. In addition, I have spent my career in computer hardware and possess proficiency in electronics.
Having spent many years in the academic world as a student (i.e., two master's degrees), I developed an appreciation for the qualities that make a great teacher. I have tried to combine the best of these qualities in my own approach to tutoring students. Yet, the technical knowledge is easy by comparison; the real challenge of a tutor is to inspire the student and to make them believe in themselves. The good grades will follow. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My Bachelor degree was in Engineering with a concentration in Computer Science. My graduate degree is MSCS (Masters in Computer Science). Among the courses I have taken: Data Structures, Operating Systems, Digital Design, and Switching Theory. I have worked with high technology companies for the past 30+ years, always with companies that developed hardware/software. In my career, I have been a hardware board designer and a manager of projects involving hardware/software development.
