I have been a special education teacher in a northwestern Bergen County, NJ town for over 30 years. I specialize in helping AD/HD children, dyslexic children, and those with specific language or math difficulties from primary grades through middle school. I have training in the Orton program to help dyslexics and in Saxon Math to help math-challenged students. I work on organizational skills and study skills, with an expertise in helping fourth through seventh graders in their content area subjects.
In addition to teaching full time, I have been a private tutor in the northwest Bergen County, NJ area for over 10 years. I have helped students with all the areas mentioned above-- all subject areas, all elementary and middle school grade levels. I prefer to either go to the student's home or meet at a public library.
I have had great success improving elementary and middle school students' work with the four basic operations, fractions, and decimals. I use a program called Touch Math to assist younger students who need support in learning their math facts.
I have worked with special needs students for over thirty years. I have extensive experience working with improving students' phonetic awareness and building upon that to also improve comprehension skills. I speak compassionately to students who have not met with academic success. I work on improving their self-confidence as the first step in achieving academic success.
Please contact me to discuss any kindergarten through grade 8 subject matter, whether it is a general education subject or special education subject. I handle it all. I am available most week days in the summer and could also work on some Saturday mornings. I have been a special education teacher in a northwestern Bergen County, NJ town for over 30 years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am quite familiar with dyslexic students and their needs. I have had Orton training throughout the years and I have the appropriate materials available to assist a student with these needs.
As an elementary special educator I have extensive experience working with various phonetic programs to improve a young students' ability to improve their phonemic awareness. From basic rhyming to multi-syllabic coding I have worked systematically to improve phonics, thus improving reading and spelling skills.
My experiences for over thirty years with classified students has given me a clear understanding of special needs students. I have patience for these students, but I also teach them to work through their difficulties to achieve their potential. I emphasis learning to become self-reliant and self-confident individuals.
