About Julian

I have a BFA in illustration and an MFA in fine art painting. For five years I taught both drawing and painting at the Montclair Art Museum, as well as several other art centers in New Jersey and a summer at my college in Boston. Art is what drives me. As a working artist I have spent a great deal of time honing my craft, learning from my failures, and pressing forward to challenge myself to grow while never compromising or abandoning my strong foundational skills. It is with this mentality that I teach drawing and painting; dedication to practice is more important than talent or style. With several years of teaching behind me, I can say with all honesty that there is nothing more satisfying than playing a part in a student's artistic journey. Many of my younger students have gone on to study in some of the best art schools in the country, while my adult students have discovered their own artistic passions as a means to decompress.

As an artist I work in graphite and oil paints on a daily basis. But living in the present, one needs to be well versed in technology. Photoshop is a program I have extensive knowledge with as it applies to painting and illustration. Photography as a tool for painting, meaning how to take quality photographs for reference, is another skill any artist should have and is something I also teach.

If you wish to work one-on-one with me, then I look forward to hearing from you! Once we are working together, I encourage feedback from both the student and parents. I'm here to help you achieve your artistic vision and hope you expect nothing less of me.

Presently I can only travel to a student's location, but am working on gaining access to the studio classrooms where I teach. My schedule is flexible and I can accommodate cancellations/rescheduling up to five hours before our meeting time. I'm ready to paint whenever you are!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have a BFA in illustration and an MFA in fine art painting. For five years I taught both drawing and painting at the Montclair Art Museum, as well as several other art centers in New Jersey and a summer at my college in Boston. Asides from my teaching experience, I have also worked as an artist since 2008, completing commercial and private commissions as well as showing extensively in New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, and San Francisco. For two years in a row I have won 1st place at the Academy of Art University's annual Spring Show in the MFA figurative category, and recently have received Honorable Mention in The Artist Magazine's "All-Media Competition."
