About Megan

As a sixth grade language arts teacher, I am able to adapt to grades above and below that level. I have five teaching certifications in the areas of elementary education, teacher of reading, language arts, social studies, and teacher with student disabilities. As an undergraduate at Rowan University, I was a reading tutor for over two semesters to elementary and middle school students. I have successfully finished my masters degree in reading at Montclair State University to become a reading specialist. My experiences have led me to structure tutoring lessons based on the needs of the child. I assess the student's ability and then provide instruction that will lead to the mastery of skills. The instruction provided is dependent on the child and his or her individual level of ability. As a sixth grade language arts teacher, I am able to adapt to grades above and below that level. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a sixth grade teacher, I am certified with an elementary education certification. I have had experience in second grade during my student teaching and through volunteering as a teacher's assistant for a kindergarten class. My experiences have showed me many different strategies and skills that can work for all different learners.

Elementary Math

I currently hold an elementary education verification and subject matter for math for middle school.

Reading

I am certified as a Teacher of Reading and Reading Specialist. When I teach reading I focus on the student's strengths and use scaffolding to improve areas of weaknesses. Some of the areas that I focus on in reading are comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary development.

Social Studies

As a sixth grade teacher, my students learn about different countries. We look at the culture, geography, history, economy, and government of the countries. One of my goals is for them to see how the past affects the development of a country and how their geography determines many things.
To be a social studies teacher, I became certified by taking the Praxis exam. My areas of interest are world culture, U.S history, ancient civilizations, and world history.

Special Needs

I currently hold a certification in special education. I did my student teaching in a resource classroom. I taught second graders in the morning and seventh graders in the afternoon. Also I have a teacher of reading certification that will help me tutor reading.

Study Skills

As a sixth grade teacher, I advocate for my students to start building their study skills and self- management skills. We work towards setting a plan of when work should be completed, how to record work that needs to be done, and the different strategies to complete the work. As a study skills tutor I would sit with the student to discuss the best way they achieved success in school and from that we will create a plan to work towards efficient study skills. Different strategies would be setting a schedule, breaking assignments or information down into manageable parts, creating note cards, writing outlines, taking notes, and other necessary skills.
