About Daphne

My name is Daphne. I have been a teacher for over twenty five years and my area of specificity is helping children who are educationally challenged. My strength lies in identifying a child's weakness while teaching to his strengths. I believe all children can overcome their difficulties and master the skills required to excel in all the subjects in the standard school curriculum. With a master's in Learning Disabilities and Certifications in Elementary and Secondary Education, I have been working with 6th through 12th graders for the last 25 years in Math, English, Reading, The Sciences, History, Spanish and Public Speaking. I help them improve their study skills, give them techniques for recalling the important information, and build their confidence so they can participate productively in the classroom. On a one to one basis no time is wasted on what the student already knows but we concentrate on specifics to enhance skills and the recall of required facts. My name is Daphne. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified special education teacher with a K-12 certification granted after completing my masters in special education at William Paterson University in 1971. I taught in the Morris School District (6th -12 grade)(self-contained- all subjects- for 17 years and also 8 Years in Woodcliff Lake and Franklin Lakes respectively. I diagnosed specific learning disabilities and designed special techniques for working with individual students having ADD/ADHD, and various forms of Autism.

Aspergers

Aspergers is a newly recognized form of Autism. I have been teaching identified autistic children since 1968. The symptoms vary from child to child, but with special techniques they can be successful in the educational setting. With certification in Special Education, a Masters in Learning Disabilities and another Masters in Counseling, and years of experience, I have been very successful getting through to children with Aspergers.

Autism

Autism has been identified in children since 1968 when I began teaching. Although it is more prevalent now, I have been working with Autistic children for many years. In some ways their difficulties actually increase their learning potential. Frequently, they are very focused, not as distracted by other children's behavior, and more comfortable with subject matter than people. Once their preferred mode of learning is identified auditory, visual, tactile, (or any combination of the 3)they learn quickly and enjoy the practice of the newly learned skill. My certification in Special Education k-12 includes all forms of educationally challenged children as well as neurologically impaired and emotionally disturbed.

Ballroom Dancing

I began taking ballroom dance lessons in 1978. I began competing in 1979. I have continued to take lessons and have competed; winning many 1st and 2nd place trophies. I have taught ballroom dancing, and am still taking lessons and dancing every week. I love all of the ballroom dances (the latin as well as the smooth) and I am proficient in all of them.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a reading disability which comes under the umbrella of Special Education. I have taken many courses in diagnosing and working with children with Dyslexia. I am also a certified LDT-C. I test for, diagnose and design educational programs for children with identified Dyslexia. Frequently, a dyslexic child is an auditory learner and learns to compensate for his disability. Reading may never become his best subject, but he learns to recognize his "reversals" and corrects his visual images.

Elementary (K-6th)

When I attended the University of Denver I carried a double Major- Special Education and Elementary Education. I student taught both in an elementary school and in a psychiatric hospital. I received certification in both Special Education k-12 and Elementary k-8. I also went on to graduate school and received certification for Preschool and Speech Therapy.

Nutrition

I have been studying health and nutrition for the past 30 years. In 2005 I attended and graduated from the New York City Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I then went on to take the national exam for American Association of Drugless Practitioners. I am also board certified as a Holistic Health Practitioner. Health was a subject I taught my Special Education children for over 25 years.

Phonics

Phonics is an important part of many reading programs. For 17 years at the Morris School District I participated in the instruction of special reading programs that incorporated Phonics into its reading program. I feel phonics can not be separated from a good reading program, and often gave phonics extra time and attention to reinforce the Reading, Vocabulary, and English Program. Although the English language has many exceptions, phonics plays an important part in developing good reading skills.

Public Speaking

I ran the Middle School Debate Team and the Dramatic Reading Competitions at Morristown for 8+ years. We frequently returned with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies. Drama was my minor in college and I was frequently chosen in High School to give speeches and oral presentations...Students learned to give speeches effectively, overcoming shyness and building their self-confidence.

Salsa Dancing

As a competitive ballroom dancer for over 30 years I have acquired many steps and know the salsa well. I have taught salsa and competed in salsa competitions. I am qualified to teach salsa. I love all the ballroom dances and the latin, which salsa is, is a favorite of mine.

Special Needs

I am certified in Special Education k-12th. I have a masters in Learning Disabilities, and another Masters in Counseling, and my Bachelors from the U of Denver emphasized Neurologically impaired and emotionally disturbed. I have worked with children with autism, emotional disturbances, retardation, and numerous other educational challenges. I have spent over 40 years teaching children with special needs.

Speech

For the last 8 years of teaching I ran the Consortium program for the Morristown Middle School. This included the debate team, public speaking, drama instruction, and co-director of the school musicals each year. I was the lead in all of my High School Plays, and attended the University of Denver on a drama scholarship, and participated in Children's Theatre for 4 years. I have taught drama and public speaking in Weekend enrichment programs for years.

Study Skills

In obtaining my Masters in Learning Disabilities, the course work emphasized specific study skills recommended for specific disabilities. For 17 years I taught the course of Study Skills to students in grades 6th through 12th that were identified by the Child Study Team to improve their reading, and writing test scores. These skills included organization methods, writing techniques, speed reading, identifying main ideas, and vocabulary building.

Tango

I have been studying ballroom dancing for over 30 years. I have competed in both the latin and the smooth dances. I am still taking lessons in tango and have taught it to couples who have wanted to learn Tango. I love to dance and am still dancing at least twice a week.
