About Gary

A great teacher is a teacher who quickly evaluates the academic strengths and weaknesses of their individual students and then adapts their teaching approach to meet the needs of those students. This could mean putting more of an emphasis on study skills, group projects, and visually-oriented learning exercises if necessary.

A great teacher also teaches with enthusiasm, and praises as much as he critiques. He asks critical-thinking questions that encourage students to solve problems independently, and to consider both sides of an issue in any given historical debate. A great teacher also ensures that students can write essays using logical organization, good sentence structure, and a well-supported thesis statement and topic sentences.

In addition, a great teacher demonstrates genuine ongoing concern for their students’ success with learning and their overall academic performance in the subject. He also maintains a classroom with a positive learning environment where there are as few distractions as possible and the students feel comfortable expressing their ideas and learning from mistakes. A great teacher tries to make class time fun yet productive. Lastly, a great teacher is always preparing their students for success in their future learning endeavors in college and the job world.

I was graduated by Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, with a B.A. in Economics with distinction-in-all-subjects. The economics program at Cornell emphasized the use of applied calculus principles to solve theoretical and real-world economics problems. Calculus is a subject that encompasses and builds on the other math subjects taught in high school, including Pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry and, of course, Pre-calculus.

I utilize a smooth, step-by-step explanatory style developed over ten years experience as a math and math SAT and GRE tutor. My teaching philosophy places emphasis on patience and creative approaches where necessary. I infuse my approach with the understanding that classroom math teachers vary in quality and that it is the tutor’s job to fill in the gaps, so to speak, so that the student starts to discover their own inherent math ability and inner math confidence.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
