About Lucero

Hello! My name is Lucero and I graduated from Rutgers University with degrees in both English literature and Visual Arts. My experience in tutoring mainly comes from my job as a writing tutor at Rutgers University, when I helped students write their essays for the required Expository Writing class. Grammar always came easy to me, so I not only write well, but I can explain the rules well too. I lived in Japan recently for 2 months interacting with college students, and they all said I was really good at teaching English. This inspired me to look for jobs in tutoring because I realize that just because someone is a good writer, or good at speaking a language, it doesn't mean they can teach or explain it well.

Teaching is one thing, and being an encouraging teacher is quite another! Most people known me as a happy, positive person, someone who always tries to inspire people to be the very best they can be. I have a lot of patience, and I love people, so many students have enjoyed working with me in the past. Just to say a little more about me, I love creative writing, drawing, comics, piano, nature, Jesus, and video games!

I studied Spanish for 4 years in high school and 2 years in college, including a study abroad program in Peru for 5 weeks. I also spent about 3 weeks in Colombia visiting family. I wouldn't say that I speak it fluently, but I can definitely speak it conversationally, and one advantage I have over native speakers is that I have a thorough understanding of the grammar, so that makes it easier for me to teach it.

Writing and English grammar have always been strengths of mine, but I really sharpened my skills as an English major, getting A's on pretty much all my papers. My experience as a writing tutor and the time I spent in Japan helped me to realize that I can explain English grammar very well! My highest SAT writing score was a perfect 800 and my highest reading score was 680.

I'm a pretty flexible person, schedule-wise and personality-wise, so feel free to contact me at any time and we'll work something out! I'm pretty chill and happy, so there's no need to be shy or nervous about having me as a tutor. I'm happy to serve any way I can!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I was leader of Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship for 2 years at Rutgers University, so I led Bible studies regularly, and often study the Bible in my spare time. I also did a campus ministry internship in Tokyo, Japan through Chi Alpha, where I led and participated in Bible studies a bit differently since many of the students didn't speak English well. In order to be accepted into the program in Japan, I had to fill out an application and was able to get a reference letter from my campus pastor.

English

As an English major at Rutgers University, I studied American and English literature for 4 years, analyzing the mechanics of the language in order to gain a deep understanding of the texts and a greater appreciation of literature as an art form. Because of my command of the language, it was easy for me to articulate my arguments in every paper, so I was able to achieve a 3.9 GPA in the major. I applied my studies to my tutoring lessons at the Plangere Writing Center at Rutgers University, teaching my students to write more efficiently, with greater clarity and power, and to think critically about the texts they were reading.

SAT Reading

My highest SAT Reading score was a 680. Since then, I studied English literature as my major at Rutgers University and thus acquired better critical reading and analytical skills. I also took classes in high school with the Princeton Review, so I can also teach about strategies specifically for scoring high on this exam. I believe my command of the language and my experience tutoring essay writing to college students will enable me to generate the most effective lessons for scoring high on the SAT Reading section.

SAT Writing

My highest SAT Writing score was an 800. When I was in high school, I partook in a program with the Princeton Review to score high on the SATs, so I also teach about strategies specifically for scoring high on this exam. Since then, I studied English literature as my major at Rutgers University and graduated with a 3.9 GPA. I also tutored college students in writing essays for their English classes and learned different tutoring strategies from the writing center there.

Spanish

I studied Spanish for 4 years in high school and an additional 2 years in college, during which I studied abroad in Peru to further my understanding and fluency in the language. I believe that not being a native speaker yet maintaining communication with native speakers, such as my family members, enables me to be an effective tutor because I can teach Spanish from the perspective of someone learning it from a non-native background. I'm also passionate about grammar, so in addition to helping others to speak and practice the language, I can explain various grammar points to make it easier for students to follow.
