About Sophia

I am currently available to tutor High school Biology and the accompanying NJ Biology Competency Exam. I also tutor college Biology courses, including Microbiology. I tutor online and in person within 15 miles of my home.

I am also available to proofread essays and other documents online.

Background:
I am a college Adjunct Professor with a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (concentration in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology). My Bachelor's degree was in Molecular Biology. I have been a tutor since high school and have helped in several disciplines including Algebra, Geometry, and writing.

Methods:
I try to help the student believe in themselves, to make them reach their highest potential by instilling self-confidence. I encourage and motivate. I am patient and caring. Homework will sometimes be assigned if necessary. I also make the student explain the concepts to me. This engages the student and also serves as an assessment for what still needs to be understood. Small quizzes also assist in assessing the progress being made.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I have successfully tutored a student this past school year in 9th grade Biology. He passed his class as well as the NJ Competency exam. I am still very proud of his hard work and diligence in catching up and passing.

As for my education, I have a PhD in Biomedical sciences, with a concentration in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, from Rutgers NJ Medical School (2010). I also have a BS in Molecular Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Montclair State Univ. (2003).

My Thesis was on the study of a cancer-causing virus, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. I also completed 3 years of a post-doc working on Bacillus subtilis at the Public Health Research Institute, NJ.

English

I am currently editing and proofreading a Master's Thesis. I give suggestions for restructuring sentences, make sure there is a logical flow, and correct any grammatical and spelling errors.

As a scientist, I have extensive experience and knowledge as a writer. I published peer-reviewed articles and a 200 page PhD Thesis.

I also worked as an editorial assistant, which involved proofreading and editing manuscripts. In high school, I was in English honors classes and passed the AP exam.

Microbiology

I graduated in 2010 from Rutgers NJ Medical School (UMDNJ) with a PhD in Biomedical sciences, with a concentration in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics.

My Thesis was on the study of a cancer-causing virus, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. I also completed 3 years of a post-doc working on Bacillus subtilis at the Public Health Research Institute, NJ.

Writing

I have written a 200 page PhD thesis as well as contributed to grant applications and peer-reviewed journal articles.

I worked as an editorial assistant in college for a scientific journal. I proofread and edited submitted manuscripts under the guidance of the editor.

I helped proofread and edit essays for a friend who applied for a dietician's internship. The application consisted of seven essays plus the creation of a professional portfolio.

Very Diligent, Dedicated, and Easy with Communication

Sophia tutored my brother in Biology in preparation for the state Biology exam administered to high school students. He was also having trouble with the subject and was very behind in class. They worked together intensively for several weeks and the results were beyond what was expected. He was able to catch up on his classwork and pass the final exam with a score in the high 80s.
