I am a full-time tutor by profession. I am a certified Teacher of English and I can assist with all related verbal skills (reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, etc.) as well as study skills and test preparation. I have worked with many students with varied skill levels 5th through 12th grade. It is my goal to help students succeed, not only in current challenges, but in the future.
I am a wife and the mother of a gorgeous, excitable 4-year-old. I love to sing, color, and write as well as play video games on the PlayStation and Wii.
My educational philosophy:
There is no such thing as a standardized student. Everyone is smart just in different ways. Some people learn differently, and that's ok.
We are all lifelong learners, and I expect to learn more about teaching as my students learn how to better learn for themselves.
Mistakes are awesome. Mistakes that happen out in the open are great opportunities to learn.
Effort is more important than talent. I am a full-time tutor by profession. Chesley is very patient with my son, she never yells or gets upset. I asked my son how it was going, and he said "she is helping me a lot." I asked him, How does she help you? He answered, "She teaches me how find main ideas and inferences on topics I read, and how to brainstorm to find information on topics given. She also teaches me how to form my paragraphs and make them make sense. She is very helpful, and easy to talk to."
Chesley had a great first lesson with my daughter. She is studying for an entrance exam in September. Chesley was friendly and my daughter felt comfortable. We plan on continuing.
I have had an excellent experience finding this service, and the value of the tutor, flexible schedule and her professionalism.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Study skills are important for every student and I often include tips on this topic with my students who are seeing me for other subjects. I am skilled at helping students manage time (creating to do lists and schedules). I am also familiar with important note taking techniques (such as SQ3R). From teaching exam prep for the past two years, I have learned various test taking techniques as well. I already require my students to stay organized, and I prove to be an example of organization for them, as I keep detailed records, I am always prepared for the session, and I keep track of all previously completed assignments.
