I patiently break chemistry and math down for students so that they understand more completely the big picture and then I help them tackle the details so that they feel confident to work through their homework and exam problems on their own. My goal in tutoring students is to alleviate the anxiety that often arises when facing problems by supplying them with a step by step approach to arriving at the answer.
I received my PhD from Boston College, conducting exciting, cutting-edge research in a materials chemistry laboratory. While in graduate school, I was a general chemistry lab teaching assistant, physical chemistry II (quantum) teaching assistant, physical chemistry I (thermodynamics) and advanced physical chemistry (graduate level) teaching assistant. I have been tutoring students since 2005 and have been able to help all levels, from elementary to high school to college-level, with a focus on chemistry and math.
In my one-on-one tutoring sessions, I hope to inspire a joy for learning, if not chemistry and math! Maggie and my son went over a chemistry make up quiz that covered conversions. She explained concepts he had trouble with, pointed out his mistakes and showed him how to fix them. She was knowledgeable and very patient with him. My son was very happy with their tutoring session.
Maggie has been wonderful in explaining Chemistry lessons to my daughter. My daughter is a Junior in high school and this is the first year she has struggled with any type of science class, her Chem teacher does not explain the lessons in a manner that she can grasp and has had a difficult time getting through exams. Maggie has explained the lessons in a straight-forward manner and one in which my daughter has been easily able to grasp, it has alleviated much anxiety and she has improved in her test scores.
My child is doing very well in AP chem thanks to Margaret. She is very clear, patient, and responsive to students questions and on time always!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
