I've been teaching for over 15 years as a Resource teacher in a general education k - 3rd grade classroom. I provide in-class support by modifying classwork for special needs students in Language Arts and Math. My goal is to help your child improve his or her basic skills in order to gain confidence and succeed academically.
Many of my special needs student have difficulty recognizing letters & sounds, blending sounds to read words and poor spelling skills. I use a multi sensory approach based on the Orton-Gillingham principals to teach reading skills. For example, dictation of letter formation and drill sound exercises are some of the strategies I use to improve reading.
In addition to teaching elementary students, I am also a certified Bilingual Spanish/English teacher. I've taught courses in speaking, listening, reading, and writing to adults learning English at a local community college. I have also tutored High School students in Spanish.

Ms. Dee is a great English tutor. Easy going, patient, professional, and she always comes to lessons well prepared. After each lesson she always tells us (parents) what she taught in the lesson and also let us know what she will be doing in the next lesson.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Dyslexia is a developmental disorder that makes it difficult for individuals to process symbols, such as, letters and numbers. Usually, this is is evident when children are learning to read. Most children have difficulty matching letters with their sounds and tend to reverse letters, for example /b/ for /d/ or the word /was/ for /saw/.
As a special needs teacher of young children, I use a multisensory approach to teach many of my students. I use sound cards to identify letter name, a picture to reinforce letter sound, and letter sound. In addition, before students practice writing their letters on paper I provide step by step instructions on letter formation. They practice by either skywriting or finger tracing several times before using their pencils. Daily practice of these skills greatly improves my students ability to recognize and correctly write their letters. This in turn has improved their reading skills.
I am a certified teacher and have been teaching kindergarten through 5th grade for over 15 years. I am a special education resource teacher and have provided in class support for children with many classifications. I have been teaching cooperatively in a general education classroom and am very familiar with the curriculum for this age group.
In recent years, I have been using the Singapore Math series, which is in line with the new common core being adopted by the education community. In addition, most of my k-1st grade students have dramatically improved their phonological awareness and become readers because of the Wilson Fundations Reading Program implemented in the school district where I work.
