About Michelle

My love of learning stems from my love of exploration. As an English major and Education minor, I have worked to develop sharing my passions with others, and encourage learning as a form of discovery. My minor in Education has enabled me to focus on teaching strategies, modes of learning, and how to actively engage my students. As an undergraduate tutor for four years at my university, I have tutored over 40 students in Expository Writing, Business and Technical Writing, Research Writing, as well as in English as an Academic Discourse for Non-English Speakers.
I have worked significantly with ESL students, as the enrollment for international students has skyrocketed at my university. As someone who has grown up bilingual, I understand that it is crucial to examine the student's background and prior conceptions as a non-native English speaker in order to help them most appropriately. I have worked in grammar, as well as in reading comprehension, essay structuring, and conceiving an argument for a paper. It is my goal as a tutor to be as attentive, focused, and organized as possible in order to most efficiently help my students. I create a variety of small tasks, aligned with a final goal, in order to create a clear direction for each session. I believe that no student is the same, and as a tutor, it is my job to uniquely personalize my lesson to each student.

As such, I specialize in tutoring various areas of English. My major in English has given me the knowledge to tutor in Literature, however I also tutor in Writing, Vocabulary, Proofreading, Reading, Spelling, and SAT Writing. I additionally tutor in Spanish, as I am a native Spanish speaker, and in Music Theory. Because I believe in the individualization of tutoring, it is crucial for me to engage in session notes after sessions in order to reflect on my students strengths and weakness, and design tasks accordingly. I assign post-tutoring tasks in order to encourage the transfer of knowledge so that students will be able to use the skills learned outside of tutoring. I believe that students should be active in their learning and avoid routine tasks. It is important for me to receive feedback from my students in order to best help my students.

I am very open to working a schedule out with my students, and am flexible in my hours. However, I do request a 24-hour notice of cancellation. I do offer make-up sessions, so we can work out a day to reschedule a lesson.

I look forward to working with you to achieve your learning goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have studied French for six years, starting at the elementary level, placing into the honors level in high school, and continuing into honors at the university level. I have also tutored French at the high school level.

Music Theory

As a music minor, I have studied Music Theory as part of my requirements. I have put this knowledge to use in playing both the guitar and piano, utilizing my knowledge in tangible applications. I believe it is important to use relevant examples, such as listening to music, in order to illustrate foundations more clearly.

As a native Spanish speaker, I have engaged in speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish as part of my daily life. In addition, I have studied Spanish for eight years in the classroom, increasing my knowledge, and have been immersed in Spanish speaking countries such as Ecuador. I believe that it is important to engage with a student's prior knowledge of Spanish, as well as engaging them in relevant tasks in order to encourage the transfer of knowledge.

As a writing tutor for four years, I have worked with over 40 students at the college level in subjects including Expository Writing, Research Writing, English as an Academic Discourse for Non-Native English Speakers, and Business and Technical Writing. I have edited college essays at both the undergraduate and graduate level, including essays for liberal arts colleges, veterinary school, and law school. As such, I pay special attention to the process of revising as a crucial step in the writing process, and model important writing strategies in order to help my students more critically examine their own writing. I am in my final year studying English, specializing in creative writing, with a minor in Education.
