The graduate coursework that I completed in the areas of Writing Research and Reading provide me valuable expertise as a tutor for both Reading and Writing Instruction. My passion for teaching is rooted in the joy that I find knowing people. I hold the Highly Qualified Status for the NJ teaching license entitled "K-8 Classroom Teacher".
Most of my experience is in middle school language arts classrooms. I currently work as an Educational Consultant who provides professional development and instructional coaching for school districts in New Jersey. I have experience teaching both evaluative and analytic writing and reading. My dual degree in Elementary Education/Psychology sharpens my ability to follow a student's train of thought and identify any gaps in the learning process. This skill-set lends to rich, individual, literacy instruction. I am a personable and caring adult who enjoys life...and therefore teaching. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have NJ Standard Certification for K-8 as an Elementary School Teacher. In addition I am Highly Qualified in Middle School Language Arts. I have taken the Praxis II for English Language Literature Composition and Content Knowledge on Middle School English Language Arts.
I have some experience sharing instruction in the AP Language & Composition Classroom, which is a college concurrent course to Freshman English I. I am a Highly Qualified, NJ licensed Language Arts Teacher who studied both Reading and Writing at the Graduate level. Most recently, I have been hired by an educational consulting company and I am training to provide professional development for Language Arts Teachers and their Administrators.
My Graduate studies qualify me in Close Reading Instruction.
Close Reading Instruction heightens the student's awareness of their own thinking process as they read. Reading strategies are modeled, discussed, and practiced on difficult texts. Success is celebrated and skills are repeated.
One-on-one Close Reading Instruction allows for personal feedback and cuts down on frustration and wasted time. The tutor is the coach, encouraging and supportive.
