About Marvin

I do not merely show my students how to solve problems, I teach them how to solve problems. This requires much less memorization and a lot more learning.

I love Science. You do not have to. I have proven my abilities in a full career as a Professional Chemist and 12 years as a High School Science Teacher. I get pleasure from helping people to develop the skills they need for a good life. I have taught at all levels, from an Inclusion Physical Science class to AP Physics and College Chemistry.

To me, math is a tool. I am certified as a teacher of both Physical and Biological Science (NJ) but not mathematics. I often have to teach/explain how to solve math problems so that my students can solve science problems. I have not yet failed to do this easily and quickly.

I will gladly answer questions concerning my ability to effectively tutor a student. My resume is available on request.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

GED

I am a professional chemist and have taught high school science for 12 years. I have written and spoken professionally, which has required a good knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. I have not yet failed to teach a student what they wanted to learn.

General Computer

I have been called a Power User, but in reality I have simply learned what I needed to learn in order to reach my goal. I am an excellent teacher of basic computer skills. Indeed, I taught Computer Science for one year.

Geometry

To me, math is a tool. I am certified as a teacher of both Physical and Biological Science (NJ) but not mathematics. I often have to teach/explain how to solve math problems so that my students can solve science problems. I get pleasure from helping people develop the skills they need for a good life. I will gladly answer questions concerning my ability to effectively tutor a student at any level.

GMAT

This test requires a variety of skills to score well. My experience as a scientist and teacher has prepared me to teach others how to work out the correct answers. Questions must be read carefully and thoroughly understood.

MCAT

I have taught and tutored college courses in the Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences to students who went on to Medical Schools of various types. The format and content of standardized tests changes over time. The Kaplan books are updated annually and provide the latest information available. I have found their information accurate and their test questions relevant.
I am a Clinical Chemist and have worked collaboratively with physicians. I hold a B.S. in Chemistry [City College of CUNY] and an M.S. in Biophysics [Yale University].

Nursing

I am a Clinical Chemist with a strong interest in medicine. I am certified as a teacher of both Physical and Biological Science (NJ). I often have to teach/explain how to solve math problems so that my students can solve science problems. I am especially good at teaching students how to change units of measure and calculate dosage easily. I get pleasure from helping people develop the skills they need for a good life. I will gladly answer questions concerning my ability to effectively tutor a student.

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry requires a lot of memorization and an unusual way of thinking. If one accepts this, the course becomes much easier.
I am a professional chemist with many years of experience, a respectable list of publications and have taught chemistry in both high school and college.

Pharmacology

Many of the students have trouble with the math, dosage, concentration and related concerns. I have an excellent background and record helping students make these calculations easily. I would not even try to advise on drug effects and interactions. Thus, I can help many students, but not all. I never teach outside my expertise. I am a Clinical Chemist and Chemistry Teacher with many years of work, teaching and tutoring experience.

Physical Science

I love science. You do not have to. I get pleasure from helping people develop the skills they need for a good life, by their definition. I am certified as a teacher of both Physical and Biological Science (NJ). I will gladly answer questions concerning my ability to effectively tutor a student at any level.

Physics

I love science. My students do not have to. I get pleasure from helping people develop the skills they need for a good life. I am certified as a teacher of both physical and biological science (NJ). I will gladly answer questions concerning my ability to effectively tutor a student at any level.

Praxis

I am certified as a teacher of both Physical and Biological Science. I passed both sets of Praxis exams with a minimum of preparation. It is my experience, confirmed with colleagues in several subjects, that if one can do well on the corresponding New York State Regents' Exam, one can usually pass the Praxis. I would be more helpful to a candidate in the sciences and mathematics, but would enjoy working with someone in most areas.

Prealgebra

To me, math is a tool. I am certified as a teacher of both Physical and Biological Science (NJ) but not mathematics. I often have to teach/explain math so that my students can solve science problems. I get pleasure from helping kids develop the skills they need for a good life. Younger students usually need a different approach than older ones, but the teacher must always respect their intellectual level. I will gladly answer questions concerning my ability to effectively tutor a student at any level.

Precalculus

To me, math is a tool. I am certified as a teacher of both Physical and Biological Science (NJ) but not mathematics. I often have to teach/explain math so that my students can solve science problems. Regents

I love Science. You do not have to. I have proven my abilities in a full career as a professional chemist and 12 years as a high school science teacher. I attended the Bronx High School of Science, where the Regents' exams were in addition to our final exams, not a substitute for them. I am confident of my ability to help students pass any Regents' exam in science or math.

SAT Math

I am a professional chemist and have taught high school science for 12 years, which requires a good working knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry, as well as the ability to teach these subjects. I have taught SAT Prep privately and for a Prep Service. I have not yet failed to teach a student what they wanted to learn.

SAT Reading

I have worked for an SAT tutoring service and tutored this subject privately. I have a Master's in Biophysics, have written professionally and have helped colleagues polish their written material. I find the Kaplan book very useful in keeping current with test changes and providing relevant study material and test questions.

SSAT

This is a test of a student's ability to learn. Specific subject content is less important. One needs to know the rules of the test and practice really thinking to solve problems. A flexible mind is a great asset.

Trigonometry

To me, math is a tool. I am certified as a teacher of both Physical and Biological Science (NJ) but not mathematics. Trigonometry is a puzzle that requires comfort with Algebra to solve. If a student's textbook is not easy to use, a New York State Regents' Review Book usually simplifies things and makes it easier to understand Trigonometry. I get pleasure from helping people develop the skills they need for a good life. I will gladly answer questions concerning my ability to effectively tutor a student at any level.

Writing

I have written a great deal, in several subjects, as a student and as a professional scientist and science teacher. My work has generally been praised and younger scientists have asked for my help in preparing written materials. My work has been published in scientific journals and newspapers.
