If a caring and understanding tutor who will meet your child's individual needs is what you are looking for, then look no further. I have been an educator in Essex County for 16 years and believe that every child is able to achieve academic success. In addition to teaching, I also tutor students at the elementary and grammar school level in grades K through 5 in language arts and math using hands-on, multisensory teaching strategies.
I am dedicated to ensuring that your child achieves academic success in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
I require that a family member be present in the home, and a quiet space to work is available, for each tutoring session, also 24 hour notice must be given before cancellation of a session.
I look forward to working with your child on their journey toward meeting their educational goals. It is not easy to find someone to help you teach your child how to do things they may be struggling with; but recognizing our daughter has a challenge with reading we knew she needed some extra help. We were lucky to find Monique. In only a few sessions she has helped improved our daughters ability to decode words and gain the confidence to try and try again. Monique brings different approaches to keep our child interested, engages her in conversation, leaves her with work both parent and child are expected to work on together and even includes a rewards incentive (if the parents are comfortable with it). We are very happy with the approach Monique takes as well as her flexibility. Most important, our daughter responds to her, respects her, trusts her and is increasing her skill set with each passing day! Thank you Monique!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Throughout my 12 years as an educational instructor, I have taught children in grades K-6, language arts/literacy, math, science, and social studies, using hands-on, multisensory activities that help student's connect to the core curriculum and support academic success. I hold a New Jersey Teaching Standard in education and in teacher of students with disabilities. In addition, I hold certifications in Children's Literacy initiative, Barton Reading System (an Orton-Gillingham based system), and Handwriting Without Tears, just to name a few. I believe all children are able to learn and design lesson plans that engage student's interest and address individual learning styles to foster a love of learning in each child. I use formal and informal assessments to gauge student's progress and drive my lesson plans.
Learning the rules of grammar helps us to speak and write so that those around us understand us. Knowing how language works helps us to read with more understanding and express our ideas clearly. I will teach your child the rules of grammar, such as sentence building, irregular verbs, use of adjectives, and more, in a fun and engaging way that will build on his/her current knowledge and lead them to reading and writing success. They will learn to speak and write well, and reach their academic goals.
Reading multisyllabic words can be challenging for many students. I have found that students that have a sound foundation in basic decoding skills have a greater chance at becoming fluent readers.
I incorporate syllabication strategies such as chunking, high utility spelling patterns, and recognition of syllable patterns, to tailor my instruction so that it is efficient, and effective.
I also integrate word studies into my lesson plans that include prefixes, suffixes, context clues and Greek and Latin roots.
For my beginning readers I understand the importance of their being able to map and blend letters and sounds, and understand the different syntactic, and semantic cues involved in reading. I emphasize the learning of these skills in a fun and active manner that helps them make reading connections.
All in all, I believe explicit phonics instruction is crucial in a child becoming a fluent reader.
Today, so many children are being promoted on to the next grade even though they are struggling with reading. I provide a research-based reading program designed to teach students how to apply necessary reading strategies that will help them achieve their academic goals. Skills such as identifing main ideas, making inferences, recalling facts and details, and synthesizing, are needed for high competency. I present these skills in a fun multisensory way that will keep your child motivated and engaged and moving towards their desired goal of reading fluency.
Vocabulary is the study of words, their meanings, and proper usage. In today's society developing a strong vocabulary is imperative. My goal is to familiarize students with a plehtora of word choices and their meanings to enhance their speaking and writing and improve their reading comprehension. Students will learn to use vocabulary words correctly and incorporate them into their repertoire to become more word conscious in their reading, writing, and speaking, in a fun and engaging atmosphere.
Writing is one of the core skills necessary for success in school and in life. The better writer a person is the better they are at communicating with others. I encourage good writing skills through guidance, practice, and self-evaluation. Your child will develop clear organizational skills, using different kinds of graphic organizers which appeal to the multiple intelligences and provide your child with visual and tactile approaches to writing that ensure a successful writing experience. I begin by laying a foundation for writing addressing basic concepts such as parts of speech, writing traits, and the writing process. I then build on that foundation with concepts and skills that will help your child become a successful writer. My methods help your child see that writing does not have to be a chore but that it can not only be fun, but their golden ticket to success.
