Literacy is my main interest, I strive to help students become strong and confident readers. As far as teaching is concerned, I began teaching by working with a program that placed creative writers into inner city schools and discovered a passion for engaging students imagination and kindling a love of language. As a Writer-in-Residence my other responsibility was to edit an anthology of the students' work. In addition to teaching creative writing, and editing, I began substitute teaching, and teaching summer school. Having majored in English Literature, and participated heavily in performing arts, college radio, and poetry venues my primary experience is in literature, speech, and writing. However, I came to all of this through a love of reading. I'd like to help students read well. In total I have worked 16 years teaching in some capacity. Having just completed my requirements for my Master in Teaching English degree, I am only now obtaining certification.
As a student I was an excellent reader, but struggled with math. I know what it is like to have difficulty and to have tutoring. My daughter is an extremely talented artist, a decent writer, and not a bad math student. My son was reading at 3, and I had to teach him math techniques that were commiserate with his capacity and ahead of where the school work dictated. Raising children and working at schools has meant that I am aware of the demands that our children struggle with whether behind, or trying to get ahead, and I am sensitive to both children and today's academic culture.
I am an outstanding English tutor because I am a compassionate and empathetic person with a passionate and lengthy experience with literature, and language. Importantly, I am interested the student and the material.
If your student needs help with reading, grammar and usage, building their vocabulary, or dealing with the nuances of literature then I can help. I look forward to meeting you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
