About Suzanne

Hello Prospective Students!

My name is Susie, and I've been teaching since I was a high school student! Since then I've taught both English and French to all ages, all nationalities, all professions and all grades. I love tutoring and recently took a top New Providence senior from a C to an A in French as well as an ACT student from a 20 to a 34 in the English section! I'm an accomplished writer since I teach it professionally and can help a student excel at school and on the SAT/ACT/College essay. Plus, I'm upbeat and make lessons fun—that's important! I have three kids, ages 28, 26 and 24, who take advantage of having a teacher for a mother.

Let's see how we may partner to help your child achieve their personal best!

Best regards,

Susie S.

P.S. The Grammar Police have officially decided that using the third person plural to refer to a third person singular is politically correct and therefore, preferable. Go figure!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am a skilled and experienced CELTA and TOEIC certified ESL instructor.

French

Although, and maybe because, I'm an American teacher of French, I'm a highly effective teacher with great passion for the language and culture. I've lived in France and travel there as often as possible. Most importantly, I bring my students where they want to be. And the journey is as much fun as the destination!

Phonics

I have a degree in Language and Linguistics from Oberlin College. I spent my Junior year abroad in Paris studying phonetics at the Sorbonne and most recently, I got a CELTA degree which relied heavily on a mastery of phonetics.

As an experienced ESL teacher, I am able to communicate clearly the why's and how's of phonics. Plus I love seeing the students' "light bulbs" go off as they "see" the sounds!

Thank You!

Proofreading

I am an expert proofreader and copy editor. My grammar is impeccable, much to the chagrin of the 100's of children to whom I've given rides over the years! No mistakes went uncorrected in my car, and the overuse of "like" was a famous pet peeve.

I also coach appropriate tone and style and follow the 7 C's of communication.

Study Skills

As a sophomore in High School, I had the most sought-after notes of any student in the Honors or AP classes. I would then teach my less organized fellow students how to craft ones own test based on notes and how to take the test over and over until you aced your own test.

Guess what? It worked! This, in fact, helped get not naturally brilliant kids into selective colleges!

Learning how to learn is actually the key to learning. I've since taken graduate level classes on effective study skills and apply this knowledge in my every day teaching.

Thank You!
