About Simone

Hello! I'm Simone G., a certified math teacher (K - 12) with a passion for mathematics and teaching. I have taught and tutored for several years, both as an Instructor for Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth (Competitive Mathematics, Cryptography), the Sylvan Learning Center and private tutoring. I have a B.S. in Science & Technology/Mathematics Education, and a M.A. in Instruction & Curriculum.

My current position at a math teacher affords me the opportunity to work with a wide range of students, and teach a variety of courses which include; general math (grade 6, 7), pre-algebra, algebra 1, and geometry. I'm lucky enough to work in a K-8 school, therefore, I'm also able to work with students in younger grades. Said experiences have shown me the importance of students having a sound foundation in their ability to reason concretely, which later become back in high levels of math.

I attempt to be creative in my approach, finding viable opportunities to infuse technology into a lesson while focusing on students' conceptual understanding, modeling the rigor emphasized by the Common Core and Mathematical Practice Standards. I enjoy showing students how math is connected to their everyday life, and technology is a reasonable platform to do so. I frequently implement the use of Google Chromebook, SMART Board, and supplementally programs such as: Kahoot!, Khan Academy, Quizlet, Google Apps for Education, Geogebra, and TenMarks. I am a Level 1 Google Certified Educator, Connected Educator (via Remind), and an Edulastic Innovative Educator.

When working with me, students do have some obligations:
1) I expect them to complete any assigned work and review assigned materials between sessions.
2) Be open about what they do not understand.

My ultimate goal is to increase students' confidence, grades/test scores and conceptual understanding. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson, please let me know. Looking forward to helping you become a MATH ROCKSTAR!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 for the past 5 years, but have tutored students for the past 8 years. Algebra 1 is a fundamental course in mathematics as students transition from concrete to abstract mathematical reasoning. The development of algebraic thinking unfolds over a period of time. My goal is to use my experience to ease the transition, while building students' confidence to continue to be successful in math.

Common Core

A a middle school teacher, I am aware of the significance of the Common Core Standard and how the drive current instruction. These standards are built into my daily lesson plans, and I use them to assistance in guiding tutoring session.

Elementary (K-6th)

I passed the Praxis Mathematic Content Knowledge Exam, and certified to teach K-12. Working in a K-8 school, I have to opportunity to work with students in the lower grades as a Math Intervention Coach. When working with younger students, I enjoy using manipulative to solidify their concrete thinking, then transition to abstract. Even at the younger ages, it's important for students to realize that math is about finding and creating patterns.

General Computer

I incorporate a great deal of technology into my classroom on a daily basis as my student frequently use their Chromebook. I am a Google Certified Level 1 Educator, Connected Educator via Remind and an Edulastic Innovative Educator. Furthermore, I use programs such as TenMarks, Quizlet, Kahoot! and Khan Academy to support my math instruction.

Geometry

Geometry focuses on the physical properties of objects, their links to algebraic concepts and its theoretical aspects. I have taught Geometry for a few years, and I see it as a great opportunity to help students understand the attributes and relationships applied in diverse contexts.

Prealgebra

I have taught Pre-Algebra for the past 5 years. Algebra 1 is a fundamental course in mathematics as students transition from concrete to abstract mathematical reasoning. Pre-Algebra exposes students to these foundational concepts, refining their thought process and is essential in higher math courses. My goal is to use my experience to ease the transition, while building students' confidence to continue to be successful in math.

SAT Math

I passed the Praxis Mathematics Content Knowledge Exam, and certified to teach K-12.

Great Math Tutor

When I decided to choose a tutor, I was very impressed with Simone G profile and when I met her for the first time, I was satisfied with her personality and integrity. I am very pleased with the work she has done with my daughter. In this short time (1 month) I know she will make a huge difference in my daughter’s math education. My daughter enjoys working with Simone and she takes the time to exp
