About Ryan

Hello Parents and Students! I realized that I wanted to be a teacher when I was in middle school. For me, it was a very simple choice, given what I like to do (interact with people, learn new things, help people) it was very natural for me to gravitate towards education. Since then, I've had amazing opportunities to study and work in education and it's become a formative experience for me. Reflecting on the work that I have done, it has always been the micro-interactions between me and the student which has driven me to do better. Helping students develop and helping them get the confidence to take control of their learning are my motivators to keep going with the work that I've done in education.

I specialize in reading, math, writing, and study skills. I emphasize skills because those are the tools students need to succeed with new material. While content is important, and students will be accountable for content, skills are the way to access and think about the content in new ways.

Right now, I'm a graduate student at Rutgers Newark, where I'm getting my certification to be a classroom teacher. I graduated from the same school in 2012 with a BA in Sociology, but I have also taken courses in math and chemistry. Since my graduation, I've had extensive experience working with a variety of student ages and backgrounds. I've been substitute teaching in New Jersey for about a year now, allowing me to work with kindergarteners all the way up to high school students. During the Summer, I had a great opportunity to teach in a Summer reading program for students of all ages.

What I've found is that some students lack the confidence to approach new material and are sometimes hesitant to give their full effort. In my classes, I've always rewarded successes and never punish for "failures." Part of my methodology is to scaffold student skills so that they have the confidence to try out different types of problems, or a new book. For most students who need help, it's about taking that first step into new territory, and knowing that it's okay to ask for help. I really enjoy seeing student success, and I've had a consistent record of creating a pathway for it.

I am very flexible with meeting times and locations! Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, and I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
