About Richard

I am a recent law school graduate interested in sharing my love of learning with people of all ages and abilities. I scored in the top 20% on the SAT and GRE verbal sections and top 10% in SAT writing. I also scored a "5" in AP US History and Psychology in high school. I think one of the most important aspects of teaching and tutoring is making the material interesting, or at least relevant for students, so that they will see learning as an enjoyable and enriching experience.

The best way to learn, in my experience, is learning by doing. What this means for any subject may vary. When working with students in English, history, or the social sciences, I will typically go over the relevant text with the student after he or she has read the material to ensure comprehension. After that point, we can work on any relevant assignments and homework. I do this because sometimes academic performance in these subjects is hindered if students don't understand the context or "bigger picture" of what they are reading. Understanding the relationships between different ideas and information is key to succeeding in the humanities, and is often key to scoring well on typical assignments like essay writing.

When tutoring in math and algebra, practice is key, but so is understanding. Showing students the logic of how to solve a problem is more important than simply showing them how to "get the right answer." While I will certainly assist students with completing their homework, I will also provide any supplemental work necessary to tackle the particular concepts with which a student may be struggling.

I am more than happy to help students with any of their academic difficulties and enrichment needs whether it be related to standardized testing, academic core subjects, or skills like reading and writing. I am also perfectly willing to accommodate different learning styles to make students feel comfortable.

If you have any questions about me or my services please do not hesitate to ask.

Seeing someone else achieve because of your efforts is a reward money can't provide.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I have a law degree from Rutgers School of Law-Camden. I have a wide variety of knowledge in the field of criminal justice that overlaps with my knowledge of law and political science. My expertise in this area extends to trials, fourth amendment search and seizure, theories of punishment, racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and theories of policing among other topics.

Political Science

I graduated with a BA in Political Science from Rutgers University, New Brunswick. I also graduated with a law degree from Rutgers School of Law-Camden. I was a member of Pi Sigma Alpha at Rutgers, which is the political science honors society.
