My name is Shamira and I am a second grade teacher in Trenton, NJ. I first got into teaching through Teach for America where I went through extraordinary training before getting my first job in Trenton. I have taught third grade for three years and am now teaching 2nd grade. I have a lot of experience with lower level children who need different academic strategies to successful, especially those who need that extra one on one time. I love what I do and I think it is very important that every student be given the same opportunity to succeed. This is what I have dedicated my life to doing and it has been very rewarding. I have no children so my students are my babies!
I have a very in depth knowledge of NJASK, PARCC, Common Core, CKLA, Fontas and Pinnel, Lexile, Star, IReady, and plenty of other reading curriculums, activities, and supplements available. I believe in using whatever techniques work best for the student whether being a visual learner, kinesthic learner, reading/writing learner, or auditory learner. My third grade students come to me significantly below level and make on average a year and a half's growth each year in reading and in math. My students have also scored 80% on the NJASK and 60% on the PARCC which is a bit higher than NJ's average. I am certified in CPR, the Sonday Phonics System, Guided Math Instruction, and Guided Reading Instruction.
I LOVE READING! Because of my passion for reading, I love teaching kids how to love reading.
I have been working with the Common Core for 3+ years and have used the CCSS to help my students close educational gaps in vocabulary, numbers and operations, measurement, phonics, literary and informational comprehension, and geometry.
I attended two graduate school for a master's in education one in Elementary Education at John's Hopkins and the other in Urban Education at the University of Pennsylvania. I also just have a really special bond with the young one's, they speak to me. :) However, I also am young enough to relate to older children as well.
If you are looking for a teacher that will be fun and enthusiastic while pushing you to do your best. Than I am the teacher for you. I am not "easy" by any means, but anything worth having is worth working for. I'll make it fun for you, I promise! Hello!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
