Hello! I earned my PhD degree in Biological Oceanography from Rutgers University in 1999. My specialization was marine microbiology, and my research involved the use of standard microbiological techniques, as well as many molecular biology methods. After completing my degree, I worked and taught at Rutgers for 7 years. My post-doctoral research involved the use of marine microbes to clean up hydrocarbon contamination in the environment. This research included creating genetically-modified organisms. Specifically introducing oil-eating genes from terrestrial microbes, into marine bacteria, so that these new organisms could be used to clean up oil spills in the ocean.

I also earned a degree in Geology, summa cum laude, from Rutgers in 1995.

I moved to high school teaching in 2006 and found my calling. I love interacting with my students, and one of the best parts of teaching is witnessing those "lightbulb moments" when a student really gets a topic, and makes it their own. I also really enjoy hearing from former students about how my classes positively impacted their lives and careers.

On a personal level, I enjoy spending time with my pug Gizmo. He's old, but still has a great attitude...and an even greater appetite! I love practicing my improvisation techniques on my tenor saxophone.

I earned my BS degree in Geology summa cum laude. This was a great achievement, but I feel what makes me a successful teacher is having used so many different scientific techniques as an active research scientist. Using my knowledge in various scientific disciplines opened my eyes to the interconnections between all the different sciences.

David S. taught me Oceanography. I appreciate how he helped me understand numerous concepts of Oceanography and explained to me why a certain answer was correct. David was also good at researching information when he himself got stuck on certain questions we reviewed. I strongly recommend David!
