Parsons School of Design, NYC (Graphics-Fine Arts)
I have been drawing and painting for more than 30 years. I became interested in art at a very young age and was always so excited to get new supplies to experiment with! I was never without a sketchbook and I was constantly drawing and sometimes the drawings were left in the sketchbook and other times they developed into more in-depth ideas and detailed images. I began studying art in undergraduate school and completed my degree at Parsons School of Design in Fine Arts & Graphics. I am skilled in both dimensional and 3-dimensional art (mosaics, sculpting and paper creations).
I love teaching and I am passionate about art education. While in college, I rounded up the local kids and taught them to paint in a make shift studio in my home. I knew one day I would have my own classroom filled with budding artists, crayons, paints, clay, scissors, paper in a rainbow of colors and more! I have been involved in many non-profit programs in NY and NJ and I am a major factor in educating the young. I am currently the program director at a non-profit art enrichment program in Holmdel, NJ.
After college, I worked for 12 years in Manhattan, working my way up to an art director. In 1985 I moved to NJ and in 1990 had my first child. I started to freelance in art locally and have illustrated children's books, designed logos, created 3-dimensional art for displays and more! I traveled through Europe and visited places like Italy, France, and Amsterdam where I was inspired to do a series of watercolors of my travels. I still work in the field of graphic design and hold a position as an art director, but my true passion is teaching art to budding artists.
My approach to tutoring and teaching art is to explore one's imagination while learning classic drawing techniques. A variety of media such as pen, pencil, charcoal, colored pencils, markers, watercolors and oil pastels are introduced and whatever else you might be interested in! Students are encouraged to make visits to museums as well as learning the history of art. I hope to integrate a fun-filled approach to learning creative arts. There is an artist in all of us just waiting to bloom. Most important our objective is to have fun and get inspired!” My students range from ages 9 and up.
I also specialize in tutoring students for preparing a portfolio for college admissions as well as college essay coaching. SEE MY BLOG FOR COURSE DESCRIPTION.
I'd be happy to send you samples of my own artwork as well as references. Hello Students!

Susan has been a great tutor thus far. She teaches at a reasonable pace and is able to respond and address questions and quizzical comments from projects or lessons assigned. Susan is easily reachable and flexible in case of extra help/time needed. For only our fourth lesson together, I have learned a great deal and am continuously curious as to what is to be taught next!
Susan is a wonderful art and portfolio tutor! She is very patient and talented. Susan understands and inspires her students to do their best, think outside the box and be creative. We are very pleased and happy to continue working with Susan.
After the first lesson I can see that Susan is very professional and extremely knowledgeable in the Art field. We got great comments and advice just in one session.
Susan is very punctual and always reachable by phone/email.
06/18/2013 - Wonderful tutor and a great person.
My son worked with Susan from September,2012 until we emailed all our College applications. Susan is a wonderful tutor she is very knowledgeable in her field of Graphic Design and arts in general. Her knowledge of the arts and the experience in the Graphic Design was the reason we selected her from all other tutors. She is a hard worker and always seem to be a step ahead of us. My son needed help in putting his portfolio for Graphic Design major together and we didn't know a lot about it. This is where Susan came in and made this long and complicated process much easier for us.
My son, applied to 8 colleges and got accepted by all of them. We selected one that best fits him. I am sure that without Susan's help we would not be in the same situation that we are right now. She used her experience and knowledge and showed us how to create a professional portfolio and she knew exactly what art work needs to be included and which one needs to be take out.
I recommend Susan as a tutor with all my heart.
My 7-year-old son had not been exposed to any art training before. Susan is his first formal art teacher, since he showed some interest in drawing a few months ago. So far my son has been with Susan for 10 lessons, and I did see his growth in art, not only on his technique but also on how he views the world in an artistic way. We haven't seen how other art teachers teaching. Susan's teaching appears to be slow and steady, but probably effective in a long run. We will see.
Thank you so much for the kind review! Slow and steady is a perfect analogy to describe my teaching your 7 year old child in his art skill development. At a certain age a child will have a grasp of numerous concepts and skills that might otherwise be learned haphazardly, and perhaps incompletely. My teaching is a low-pressure approach to guiding your child through learning the natural way, by doing and observing. Physical skills, spatial concepts, and the like are touched on and expanded gradually. Many of the activities will be expanded to include other art supplies, such as paints and pastels. As the child makes progress, the assignments will become more challenging and he will learn skills that will be with him forever.
Susan knew exactly how to help my daughter prepare her college applications. I would highly recommend her for great results and keeping our family stress free!
Really helpful on my portfolio and find a lot of information of the college! I am really happy to study with her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an Art Director, I have over 30 years experience in creative design and production. Feel free to explore my profile and other certified subjects.
Working since 2003 as a program director and instructor in an art enrichment program and studying Art History in college, I have taken my students to The Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, The Cloisters, The Philadelphia Museum, The Glass Museum, The Guggenheim, The Whitney, Grounds for Sculpture and may other places and have held instructional tours where we discuss Art Theory and how it relates to what we have seen. It is very informative and allows the students to explore and understand concepts in art. Art is a visual representation of a range of concepts, stories and emotions, including curiosity, humanity, political statements, and the Self. I examine and explain the development of the different ways in which people study, interpret and appreciate art in its rich variety of forms. The simple idea of "art" is explored.
I received my degree from Parsons School of Design. I have always drawn since childhood and was curious at a very young age to explore all types of art. I have exhibited my art and have also sold many of my pieces. I am currently the Program Director of an art enrichment program and have been teaching there since 2003. I work in many mediums such as watercolor, acrylics, pastel, color pencil and pencil.
