Math and Computer Science Tutor
Although I spent most of my career in IT on Wall Street, I don't remember a time when I didn't tutor. As "fifth from the top" in a family of eleven children, I starting tutoring my younger siblings at a very early age. Although I spent most of my career in IT on Wall Street, I don't remember a time when I didn't tutor. As "fifth from the top" in a family of eleven children, I starting tutoring my younger siblings at a very early age. The first official tutoring job I had with a student outside of my family was with a fourth grader when I was in the seventh grade. I tutored children sporadically throughout high school and college. In my undergraduate program at NYU, I majored in Computer Science after spending my first two years as a Pre-Med student. In my junior year, when I switched to pursue a Computer Science major, I worked as a student computer consultant, helping students with their computer science assignments at both NYU and Baruch College Computer Centers. I think one of my proudest tutoring moments was, while I was in my senior year at NYU and still working at the computer centers of NYU and Baruch, I also taught the six-year-old son of one of NYU's professors how to program in the BASIC programming language on a PC. It involved first successfully teaching him some pre-algebra concepts. I wonder to this day what that child, who actually learned to program at 6, is doing today in life.
In my last job as a Vice President in IT at a NYC Investment Bank, I read to/with nearby elementary students on my lunch hour in the Everybody Wins reading program my company participated in for several years. Also, when I completed my coursework towards a master's degree in Computer Science at NYU Courant Institute Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, I started teaching first, third and/or sixth graders religious education and continue to this day. A fun moment for me a few years back was teaching some calculus concepts to my then ten-year old stepson and to see his face light up when he was really "getting it."
I am patient, will adjust my teaching methods to the individual needs of the particular student and specialize in math and computer science. I have also recently worked with many GRE students. I look forward to the opportunity to help you or your child not only succeed in school but enjoy it as well!
Cecilia hasn’t set a schedule.
7/25/13 - My son has been extremely fortunate to be tutored by Cecilia. As a result of these sessions, he has quickly grasped the fairly complicated subject matter. This is due in no small part to Cecilia's knowledge and patience. She is very intelligent and possesses the ability to present complex ideas and information in terms that are understandable. She's also very accommodating, and she will fit in extra time when you need it. I highly recommend this tutor, you will not be disappointed! 9/28/13 (update) - I want to follow up on my last comments above which were written in July 201 - before my son took the class for which he was being tutored by Cecilia. He is now over a month into the class at TCNJ in his first semester. He never took any computer class in high school, and he has understood with ease all topics discussed to date. He is maintaining an A+ average which he attributes, in large part, to the help Cecilia provided. He frankly states he would have been lost but for the summer sessions with Cecilia. 11/22/13 (update) - Again, I have to give kudos to Cecilia. Not to belabor the point, but my son who had zero computer science knowledge and who admits he would have struggled mightily to get up to speed but for Cecilia's help in the summer is maintaining an A+ average in his computer science class @ TCNJ.Andrew, 9 lessons with CeciliaTutor responded:
Thanks so much, it was my pleasure to work with your son. I'm glad to hear he's doing so well!
This was my first experience with WyzAnt and a tutor for my son. She was on time and actually stayed a little later then scheduled to talk to us about the lesson. She made my son feel at ease and comfortable. I asked my son how he felt and he was very happy and thought that the lesson helped. We have booked Cecilia for future lessons.Ken, 14 lessons with Cecilia
Super knowledgeable about esoteric stuff.
She really helps me out. I've seen her 3 times and expect to see her another ten if I'm still having problems with my class. Then I'll see her for some calculus stuff too. (Again, if I need her. But I'll probably see her anyway just to codify the concepts in my head.)Sean, 7 lessons with Cecilia
Cecilia is a very dedicated tutor. She is patient, understanding and very thorough . She goes over each step of the math problem and truly wants the student to succeed. She is always available to answer any questions and will get back to the student quickly. I am very happy that we were able to find Cecilia and feel that she always goes above and beyond in each of her tutoring sessions.Joan, 8 lessons with Cecilia
A Personable Mathematician With Good Communication Skills & Resources
I chose Cecilia to help me prepare for GRE math. Her initial emails showed her to be the literate, personable, sincere, and caring tutor that she is. I am a totally right-brained artist, actor, and writer so I was glad that she discerned the style of communication that I needed. A very resourceful tutor, she brings extra printouts to sessions which you will keep. She will find and deliver the right approach you need.Sandra, 8 lessons with Cecilia
