I am a New Jersey certified Art Educator, skilled in the instruction of Language Arts as well as in the Academic Fine Arts and Intermodal Expressive Arts. I am a graduate of Hunter College with a BA in Fine Arts and Interdisciplinary Honors Studies and I studied Expressive Arts Education at the European Graduate School in Switzerland. I have a passion for creating art through the language of words and images. Helping a student learn how to express, communicate and compose their thoughts and visions confidently, creatively and coherently through the written word or visual arts is my gift.
As a Newark Arts into Literacy trained and Certified Educator, literacy is a woven into everything I teach and do. As a writer of curriculum, poet, song writer and creative writer, I specialize in all areas of the Language Arts from grades 2-12 and for adults, including spelling, vocabulary, grammar, reading, comprehension, note taking, writing, proofreading, personal statements and public speaking. I can meet the struggling student as well as the accelerated learner where they are at in their development and help them cross the next threshold of their personal achievement through the art of language.
As an Interdisciplinary Arts Educator, I taught for 10 years in a k-8 school and collaborated with teachers from all subjects and grades integrating the Arts across disciplines. I am very familiar with the expectations of elementary and middle school education and the social-emotional needs that accompany this age range. Patience, practice, persistence and playfulness are usually what make the difference between a child who thinks they can and will, and one who fears s/he can't and therefore won't. I am also a proponent of Homeschooling and am available to assist Homeschool students and parents create custom interdisciplinary learning projects.
As a distinguished, certified Art Teacher and Creativity Mentor with my own Coaching practice, I am adept at helping aspiring Art students hone their observational skills and attention to detail, stretch their imaginations, develop their technique and prepare portfolios for Middle and High School or College and beyond. I can also offer tutoring in the areas of Art History and Art Critique. For young emerging yet, struggling artists, I offer mentoring in the form of Creative Life Coaching to help you dialogue with your creations to determine what's blocking you and help you use the Creative Life Process to move your art and your career forward. For students simply seeking creative self expression and improved technique, I offer encouragement, inspiration and instruction. My primary visual art modalities are drawing, painting and mixed media.
After teaching in the classroom for ten years, I now prefer the joy of teaching one on one. So many classroom teachers are not fully able to provide the individual attention to each student in order to help them develop their own unique voice, articulate their perspective and nurture their love of learning. I like to consider myself part tutor/part mentor, which is what every good teacher should really be and what every student truly deserves. I believe in student mastery and encourage every student to take great care in their work and master whatever it is they are learning so that they can teach it to anyone.
I am generally available everyday from 9am- 7pm. I can travel to students, but prefer to see them at my home office/studio where I have plenty of supplies or the library. My base rate is $90 for in person tutoring and $50 for online tutoring. I also offer package discounts. I look forward to helping you or your child excel in the art of verbal and/or visual expression!
