About Sara

I am certified English Language Arts teacher (grades 6-12) in both NY and NJ as well as a certified Reading Specialist grades K-12. I have over 5 years of teaching experience as well as over 10 years of tutoring experience for children of all ages and academic backgrounds. I have experience tutoring students in English, Reading, Writing, Vocabulary, History, Test Preparation (SAT, ACT, Regents, PARCC & AP) as well as general study/organization skills.

My teaching & tutoring experience has enabled me to work with a diverse student population with different academic and emotional needs. In an inclusive classroom, where student's reading levels varied by upwards of 7 grade levels, I differentiated instruction and created modifications to best been the needs of all students while still aligning lessons to The Common Core Standards and in preparation of state exams. These practices translate well to tutoring as I strongly believe that in order to succeed, students need to be given individualized lessons tailored to meet their needs. Through diagnostic tests and using data driven instruction, students will receive personalized lessons that address areas of weakness in specific content and skill standards.

I believe that all students, regardless of race or socio-economic status, have the ability to excel academically. When students are met with a passionate and prepared educator, like myself, who provides the tools and skills necessary for success, the results can be extraordinary. I have a strong commitment to student success through differentiated instruction, classroom support, data driven instruction and most importantly high expectations as a mean to foster scholarly growth and development.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I am the 12th grade (senior) advisor in my high school. I am responsible for overseeing and advising all college applications for all students as well as the processes associated with college (SAT prep and registration, essay writing, FAFSA/TAP/PELL). I have worked with students and their families for the last 5 years to make the college process easy, comfortable and effective.

I am a certified Reading Specialist for grades K-12 (Literacy Certification). I believe in a balanced reading approach (mixing phonics and whole word) to best meet the needs of students. Through the use of diagnostics, I am able to identify student needs and create individualized lessons to help students improve their fluency & comprehension.

Public Speaking

As a teacher, I spend ALL day speaking publicly. I know the importance of being able to express oneself effectively and communicate your ideas to an audience of people. In my classes, I teach public speaking skills and encourage students to speak publicly in small doses every day as well as presentations throughout each unit and debates. I strongly believe that being able to speak publicly is a cornerstone of education and is necessary to succeed academically. By teaching public speaking skills (eye contact, tone, speed, preparation, etc.) students become more comfortable and confident enabling them to succeed in classes, job interviews, as well as in other real life scenarios where they may be asked to communicate verbally with others.

I am a NYS certified ELA teacher in grades 7-12. I have taught grades 10 & 11 for 6 years where I prepared students to take the ELA regents (Comprehensive AND common core). My students pass rate exceeded the NYC standard and the NYS standard. With purposeful writing practice, the use of expository texts and practice, I prepare students to pass the ELA regents as well as teach strategies which are useful on both the Global and US Regents.

Special Needs

I am a certified ELA teacher grades 7-12 and a certified Reading Specialist grades k-12. I have extensive experience working in ICT classrooms and integrating special education students seamlessly into a gen.ed classroom. I strongly believe in inclusion and that it is the responsibility of the teacher to differentiate instruction and modify to meet the needs of ALL students. As a reading specialist, I run SETTS classes (both push in and pull out) where I have provided targeted reading & writing instruction to students whose reading levels were significantly below grade level.

Study Skills

I have been a 9th grade advisor for 5+ years where I was responsible for creating a study skills class ensuring my students made a smooth transition to high school. This included helping with organization, planning and preparation as well as teaching study skills such as note taking, outline writing, note cards, etc.
