An experienced teacher and musician, I've been teaching students from ages 8-25 for the last ten years. Two years out of graduate school, I am enthusiastic and energetic about music and learning, and eager to share my knowledge with students! In teaching the piano or organ, I teach not only technical skills, but music theory (how music is constructed), music history, and other skills, but most importantly help each student to develop a sense of their musical self. Music, beyond being about technical proficiency, is about moving people, and expressing yourself. My teaching philosophy balances these needs.
I am a doctoral candidate in music (organ and piano) at Yale University, I earned my masters there in 2012. I have an excellent background in music history, ear training, and piano, having taught these subjects privately, and in school.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a bachelor's degree in organ (Oberlin College, minor in piano), and a master's degree and doctoral coursework in music at Yale University. I took courses in aural skills (ear training) in both college and graduate school. I am versed in solfege (both fixed and movable do).
I've taken a total of 10 semester long music history courses at the college and graduate school level (from Medieval music to 20th Century music), and my thesis at Yale was historical (late 19th c. French notions of the virtuoso).
