About Chip

Hi:

I am both a former Member Of Technical Staff (MTS) at Bell Laboratories, and a former Adjunct Professor at Columbia University & NYU. In my long-ago life as a high school student I lettered in Debate, and have used the experience to give presentations to both large and small groups through the years.

My engineering work encompassed both Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, and lasted about 15 years. The professorial work focused on Computer Science, which I taught over a period of roughly ten years. In addition I was a computer consultant for many years on Wall Street, working solely on large UNIX servers & networks.

My personal interests, which are wide & varied (from DIY to sociology to neuroscience), bring a "seasoning" to my lectures, and add perspective & richness to them.

I can only echo the sample letters, and finish by saying I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Linux

From 1989 to 1998, I taught a number of classes concerning UNIX through various adult education programs in New York City, including the Columbia University, New York University, and the New School For Social Research. These included introductory classes, shell programming classes, system programming classes, system administration, and advanced system administration. Professionally, I quite successfully managed both large and small UNIX server farms, databases, and trader workstations for a number of companies on Wall Street for over a decade. Since ending my professional UNIX career, I have used Linux extensively and know it very well.

Mechanical Engineering

I have a BSME and MSE, both in Mechanical Engineering.

I practiced engineering from 1976 to 1980 as a GMI student (this was not an internship, students were expected to do real engineering when they were at the plant, and we were paid a real wage). From 1980 to 1984 my position was R&D Engineer at the Hydra-Matic Division of General Motors. I took a year off to earn my MSE from the University Of Michigan Rackham School. Following that, I became a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ, where I worked from 1985 to 1989.

UNIX

I have 15+ years' experience with UNIX SysAdmin. Additionally, I taught UNIX & (some) C programming for 10+ years.

Chip is a wonderful tutor. He is very knowledgeable and patient. — Chip tutored me in Excel, which for me, as an older student, is very challenging. He explained the concepts, and never lost his patience, despite having to reinforce them a number of times. He was very knowledgeable, and came to the session, with notes that he had prepared for me. I am very pleased with his level of knowledge, and his teaching method. I would not hesitate to use him again. ...
