About Stephanie Silk

I have been a teacher, volunteer Big Sister, and coordinator of after school programs for 12 years. I love teaching, especially as it occurs in tutoring, in a one-on-one or small group setting. I am creative and do my very best to be attuned to the needs and goals of my students. I understand that learning is best achieved when enjoyment and interest are maximized.

I am currently enrolled in a Masters in Elementary Education (M.Ed.) program at Lesley University and am doing student teaching in 2nd grade. Prior to this, I worked as an instructor in the Rabat American School’s Elementary Library, where I assisted and substituted for the K-5 library classes and wrote and taught library reading curriculum for the preschool level.

I am a certified Teacher of English as a Foreign Language, and have experience teaching in the United States and Morocco, where I have taught classes of youth ages 7-10, 11-13, and 14-adult. I have written and implemented ESL curricula at an intensive summer program for youth. I am fluent in French and Spanish and among the students I have tutored is a young autistic French-speaking boy. I have tutored students of diverse backgrounds in reading and elementary mathematics and in each case I am pleased to say that the teachers have reported significant improvement in the students’ work and learning.

Finally, as an adult learner myself, and someone who has needed and received extra academic help throughout my life, I understand what it feels like to be on the receiving end of effective tutoring and teaching. This experience guides my work. It would be my privilege to work with you in the future to assist you in your learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently enrolled in an elementary teaching certification and Masters in Education program at Lesley University. I am student teaching in a 2nd grade classroom and in this capacity I have led all four of the class' reading groups, taught grammar and writing lessons, and written and taught lesson plans on use of informational text and reading comprehension. I have also worked in the same capacity in a 3rd grade classroom. Additionally, I have a solid background in the reading needs and levels for Pre-K through 6, having worked as an Assistant to the Elementary Librarian. I established a curriculum for the Pre-K library program, which I taught myself and assistant taught the library classes for K-6. Subjects addressed in these classes included alphabetical order, genres of reading, research methods and book reviews, and understanding and avoiding plagiarism.

Elementary Math

I have had long-term math tutoring positions in the 2nd and 4th grades, in which considerable improvement was seen in the students' performance by both the teachers and parents, and, perhaps most importantly, increased sense of competence and confidence in the students. I am currently student teaching in a 2nd grade classroom where I teach math. As of April 2012, I am just completing a master's course in new teaching methods of elementary (K-6) mathematics in which problem-solving methods, critical thinking and arriving at a solid understanding of mathematical concepts and operations is emphasized. In particular, in my tutoring and teaching I apply and teach the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice that are part of Massachusetts' Mathematics Curriculum:

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

I would love to be part of enhancing your child's math learning and taking on math as a way to expand his or her understanding of the world.

English

I studied comparative literature in college, and have experience studying the form and content of novels of different periods. My experience in creative writing also informs my tutoring in literature. I have tutored students in comprehension and essay writing in American and English literature. Literature is one of my great motivators and I love being part of the process of bringing it to life with others.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language Certification and have worked at accredited schools and language centers in Morocco and the U.S. teaching English as a Second Language to elementary, middle, and high school students as well as to adults.

French

Learned French while living in Belgium as a child. Studied French language and literature at university level. Long-term travel in France, Cote d'Ivoire, and Haiti. Lived in Morocco for 2 1/2 years and taught monolingual French students, frequently translated French-English and English-French in work settings.

Phonics

As part of my Masters in Education program, I have taken a Foundations in Reading course in which I learned theories of phonics as part of literacy instruction and wrote and carried out lesson plans addressing phonics to pre-k through 2nd grade students. I have a solid understanding of the levels of phonological awareness and methods of teaching phonics as a tool for decoding words, from the earliest learning stages at Pre-K through 3rd and 4th grade where more sophisticated word analysis is called for.

Spanish

I began my study of Spanish as an adult, based on an interest in Latino culture and literature. I studied Spanish intensively in college, and went on to work in areas of Texas and California where I was required to attain fluency. I have 7 years of experience working with the Latino community in greater Sacramento, CA. I conducted meetings in Spanish, translated, and prepared written correspondence in Spanish. I enjoy the language, its literature and its music a great deal and genuinely find it rewarding to share this with students of Spanish.

Special Needs

I have worked with autistic children, primarily in a one-on-one setting, to provide tutoring in reading and motor skills. I have also worked with developmentally delayed students in reading and math skills. I have tutored adult students in English and reading, two of these students were both English Language Learners and operating with developmental delays. I embrace the opportunity to work with youth and adults of all abilities and have never found a student who was unable to learn or unable to teach me.

Study Skills

As part of my ESL Teaching certification, I studied effective skills for academic success, an important component of my teaching. Additionally, as a tutor, especially to middle and high school students with a great deal of independent work, mastering the teaching of study skills is a very important part of what I do. Finally, in my learning as a M.Ed. student, I have studied comprehension techniques and effective "reading for information" approaches to glean the important information from given texts and how to transfer them appropriately into assigned work.

Writing

I have been a lifelong writer both creatively and professionally. In my work at an international public health consulting firm, I wrote, edited, and proofread business proposals for public health projects. This included academic writing addressing biology, epidemiology, anthropology, and sociology. I have also written a thesis in economics and tutored masters students in their thesis writing, as well as high school and college students in essay and research paper writing. On the creative side, I attended the University of Iowa's Summer Writing Program in short story writing and poetry, and have written poetry in English and French. I would love to be part of your writing endeavors!
