About Hala

Hello, I am a native Arabic speaker. I find myself irresistibly drawn to teaching because it has allowed me to see important human values within the educational system. By developing distinct teaching plans, creative utilization of activities, careful selection of teaching materials, appropriate choice of communicative and effective teaching strategies, my reflections and creative talents is adapted into tangible results in my tutoring sessions. In my instructional career, I have demonstrated the ability to influence student improvement through quality lectures, discussions, assignments, and I will continue doing that through tutoring my new and future students.

In addition to teaching Arabic during my position as an Arabic Lecturer, I also served as an Arabic Language Coach and Curriculum Developer for courses in interpretation and translation at the Language Institute at Rutgers University. I have translated original English documents to Arabic and from Arabic to English for educational, medical, and community related materials. As a librarian, I worked in an academic library system for more than 12 years where I worked with Arabic and other Middle Eastern Languages. Moreover, I worked as a Freelance Arabic Interpreter and Translator for the Educational Translation Services through the New Jersey Department of Education, Early Intervention Program.

• I specialize in teaching non-heritage learners.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I am a native Arabic speaker. I have a Master’s in Library and Information Studies and a B.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. In addition, I have 12 Language Education credits at the graduate level. I have taken several Language Education Workshops on Less Commonly Taught Languages, including a 55-hour Heritage Language Teacher Workshop through StarTalk at UCLA Center for World Languages.

I served as an Arabic Language Lecturer at Rutgers University and as Senior Lecturer of Arabic at Ohio State University for several years. I taught Modern Standard Arabic, Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. I revised and developed curriculum, created syllabi, lesson plans, unit plans, quizzes, and exams. I planned, evaluated, and revised course content, and course materials. I also taught and developed material for Arabic Lab courses in a computer lab setting.

Additionally, I also worked as a volunteer and a tutor for more than twenty years. I taught and tutored all levels of Modern Standard and Colloquial Arabic to adults, school students, college students and to students from diverse backgrounds.
