About Lisa

For many years, I have worked as a Reading Specialist in the education system. I have been trained in Wilson, Lindamood Bell, and Close Reading, to name a few, and most recently received a certificate from the University of London for a course on dyslexia. While I do use data from both informal and formal assessments to help isolate the needs of students so that instruction can be individualized, I also am able to listen to a child read and have a conversation about their reading to determine the areas they are struggling in.
Over the years I have participated in meetings of the Intervention and Referral service as well as the Response to Intervention process for Grades K-5. I have delivered instruction to all Tiers 1, 2 and 3, ranging from minimal intervention to the most intensive intervention offered. I particularly like the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention program and have found great success with it, integrating additional strategies from other programs and resources as needed.
As the Reading Specialist, I provided teachers with materials to help support the curriculum and worked closely to collaborate on best practices. Through the years, I spearheaded many new programs to build a community of readers in the schools. I developed and facilitated an Early Intervention evening for parents to model techniques that can be used at home to support their child’s learning. Additionally, I wrote articles for the school newsletter with practical ideas parents could implement at home to enhance their children’s reading development.
All of my evaluations and annual summaries were outstanding and rated highly effective and innovative. All of my students made tremendous growth as shown by pre and post evaluations. There is absolutely nothing like watching a child's self-confidence and love of reading grow as they attain the skills and strategies needed to become successful.

I have many years of experience with teaching students strategies to use while reading various genres of literature to enhance their understanding of the material. Additionally, students are taught to reflect and write about their reading. Students are taught each of the elements of reading such as the story elements and use of higher level critical thinking. For those students who have limited ability with reading, methods are used for assisting in retaining the material read.
Strategies are also taught for enhancing writing skills by building upon areas of need, whether adding more description, editing, varying sentence beginnings, word choice, etc.

Having worked with children in multiple grades over many years, the development of phonemic awareness and phonics skills always takes a front seat since it is the foundation of reading. I have been trained in Wilson and Lindamood Bell and use elements of these programs in the teaching of phonics. I also like to use the phonics lessons from the Leveled Literacy Intervention program through Fountas and Pinnell and have become experienced in the scaffolding and scope and sequence of introducing phonics. Students are taught through various techniques including integrating physical engagement and transferring the information to text.

Reading spans all of the subject areas, and as such it is imperative that your child becomes comfortable in this subject area. Reading should be fun and I have been privileged over the years to watch children who didn't want to pick up a book, become avid readers as their confidence grew. I would be very excited to help your child learn the skills and strategies to become a lifelong reader.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I am a Reading Specialist and have been trained in Wilson and Lindamood Bell and have used the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention program for years. Additionally I have received a certificate from the University of London in teaching students with Dyslexia. Students are taught phonics using a scope and sequence that is scaffolded. I integrate physical activities as well as elements of the above mentioned programs, to help retention of phonemic awareness and phonics that can be transferred to text.
