About Malcolm

I am a recent graduate from the George Washington University. I graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. I have always had a passion for writing, no matter the subject matter. Throughout college I have taken numerous courses pertinent to writing and developing an idea. Over time I have developed different habits that have allowed me to excel as a writer in different realms. I have had experience as a tutor with a private company, Lindamood-Bell, in the past. Working with Lindamood-Bell was an exceptional experience in which I learned just as much from my students as they did from me. Teaching requires a certain degree of patience and energy to persist through the obstacles. Through my experience tutoring, I concluded that I possess both of those attributes. In fact, I am more motivated by the triumphs of students than the challenges. I love to tutor English and reading to students because I believe they're imperative to day to day life and staple skills. One key distinction about tutoring is emphasizing and celebrating how far a student has come, as opposed to how far they need to go. With this mindset I found that students become inspirited to step up to the challenge and become eager to learn.
My approach to tutoring involves audiovisual techniques that allow students to familiarize themselves with the structure of words. With this they gain a more thorough understanding of prefixes, suffixes, roots, and more. One of my goals in teaching the English language is developing vocabulary. For vocabulary, I also like to use visual depictions to further help students grasp the concept of different definitions. I find that the visual approach to English is most effective because it gives students a picture to relate the words to, furthermore allowing them to use their words to paint pictures more effectively. In my experiences tutoring, the visual component has facilitated more elaborate stories because it has already positioned students to not only picture their words, but also picture the meaning, in turn, picturing the story.

I am an outstanding tutor because I have spent time as a private tutor using visual techniques to teach children from the ages 8-12 the English language. The techniques I have been taught break down the language to its basic fibers through audiovisual patterns that allow the students to not only understand the grammar, but visualize the words to make word recognition second nature. I used this technique to help my younger students separate words into understandable portions. With this basic understanding of how to teach younger students English, I have gained a better perspective on how to teach English people of all ages. Moreover, I have admittedly witnessed this approach sharpen the reading and writing skills of adults. This has worked from both perspectives of reading and spelling. As a writer, I have excelled writing research papers, analytical pieces, and creative writing. Vocabulary has been a specialty of mine. I have made it a habit to write down new words on a weekly basis to continuously expand my vocabulary. This habit has been helpful and steadily continuing for 8 years.

I encourage students to contact me. As a young man myself, I understand the qualms of the youth and of the English language. With positive reinforcement and a bit of guidance, I'm sure I can be of assistance one word at a time.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
