A little bit about my background: I went into teaching 13 years ago to be able to make a difference in the lives of children. Soon after I started my education degree, the realm of high stakes testing began. I spent a number of years inside the classroom and decided it wasn't the place for me - teaching to the test is not what helps students actually learn, in my opinion. It was from there I earned an M.S.Ed. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). While I was working through that program, I began to manage a community center, where I have been making a difference in the lives of children every day for 8 years. Approximately 6 years ago, I began doing some tutoring at a nationally known tutoring center which rekindled my yearning to teach.

I prefer the individualized attention that tutoring offers to students, particularly as a tutor who has the ability to get to know each student's personality quirks, learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses and be able to teach to those avenues. I try to pull upon real life, relevant examples in order to make the information "stick" for each student. I have a high success rate in both private and corporate tutoring and am consistently recommended and requested in both environments.

With that being said, I understand the financial burden supplemental education costs can bring upon a family. I try to keep my rates reasonable to include any materials and/or travel that may need to occur in order to assist you/your student. I am also somewhat flexible on my rates to assist students and families in need, with the exception of standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE, TOEFL, Praxis, etc.). I try to run my tutoring to be as much of an "open book" as possible - the same way I run my community center. I keep very open communication with students and parents regarding progress, missed assignments, red flags, and green lights as well. For study skills/organization and test prep students, I do assign homework, as it is one thing for the student to understand the information while I am sitting in from of him/her but another for him/her to be able to do it independently.

I live in Ewing but work in Sayreville so I have a bit of a commute and am willing to commute within those two areas for my students. I am asking for a minimum of 4 hours advance notice for cancellations and I will do the same for you. However, I understand that things happen and kids come home sick from school, so I am always willing to provide make up sessions in the event that we can work it around the rest of my schedule. For the most part, I also have availability to almost always do online tutoring sessions, which may make travel and scheduling easier for everyone, especially during inclement weather.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I currently manage and operate a community center. I employ approximately 75 people ranging in age from 15 to 60 years old. I have written countless recommendation letters, assisted with resume writing, provided guidance for careers paths, as well as guidance for the college admission process for both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Common Core

While there is no specific test prep program for the Common Core, I assisted in the development of a PARCC prep program at the tutoring center I am at now. We worked through a pre-assessment, content instruction, and progress assessments to ensure each student is working through their weaknesses according to the latest release of the PARCC content.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and have taught in a combination general/special education classroom for a number of years before moving on to tutoring. While my current tutoring students are primarily SAT prep, I work with students from beginning reading thru middle school math.

Flute

I began taking flute lessons in the 4th grade and played through my collegiate years. I have provided private instruction for a younger sibling over the past year or so as well.

Handwriting

A number of the students I have worked with in beginning reading also needed some assistance with handwriting, particularly in ensuring the letters are facing the right way and/or how to hold a pencil correctly. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and have taught in a combination general/special education classroom for a number of years before moving on to tutoring.

IELTS

I hold a M.S.Ed. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). I have tutored students in all aspects of English Language Acquisition, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Phonics

A number of the students I have worked with in beginning reading, which focuses on the instruction of basic phonics. This understanding of phonics is also translated into work with ESL/TESOL students as well in terms of their reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and have taught in a combination general/special education classroom for a number of years before moving on to tutoring.

Praxis

As a certified teacher in both NY and NJ I had to take a number of teacher prep exams., including the Praxis. I passed all attempted Praxis exams the first time I took them and with above average scores. I have tutored a number of students on the Praxis exam, both the general form and some subjects as well.

Study Skills

I have found with my students that a number of issues relating to study skills have to do with a student's ability to organize his/her life. I work with students on using a planner for homework assignments, long and short term assignments, tests and quizzes, as well as extending it to appointments that are coming up. We find the strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles of each student and find the best way to work through those for the student to achieve the highest level of success.

Swimming

I currently run a community center where swimming is vital to our daily operations. I manage all aspects of our aquatic facility and have for 5 years. This includes a large swim lesson program for group and private instruction. I currently teach at least 3 private lessons each week, oversee all instructional lessons, and coach a local high school swim team.

She cares a lot for your child's success!!!

Katelyn helped my daughter go from a 27 to a 33 in her ACT Science section!!! It's been an absolute pleasure watching Katelyn tutor my daughter and transforming her approach to the ACT science section. She is a super charged young lady who motivates your child into thinking that taking the ACT Science section is a piece a cake as long as you use the right thought process. Katelyn is very meticulou
