College of New Jersey (English, Education)
I am well versed in approaches to teaching grammar, vocabulary, and writing as well as reading comprehension and test taking.
*Certified English Teacher*
I have earned a degree in English and secondary education through The College of New Jersey and have taught middle school Language Arts classes through student teaching and as a full time teacher.
I tutored for a several months at an elementary school as well as with a local tutoring center in Piscataway, NJ where I tutored in all subjects include SAT prep, Praxis prep, and math.
I have also worked as a tutor through a very highly regarded tutoring company founded by two Princeton University graduates.
*Current Free-Lance Tutoring*
I am currently working with a number of students from 4th to 12th grade and am enjoying helping each of these students grow. Over the course of my teaching experiences, I have collated a number of resources and self-constructed lessons to address a variety of needs for a range of students' abilities.
My teaching style is very student-centered, utilizing methods in which students learn through creation or replication of model texts or through the application of words and concepts, rather than the mere memorization of them. Though I believe teaching does involve the collection of and development of knowledge, I also have come to believe that "education is the lighting of a fire" more so than "the filling of a pail," and so, I am committed to creating a personalized experience for each of my students, emphasizing subjects and aspects of writing that interest and motivate them.
*Vocabulary instruction is dependent upon the level of the student and the intentions of vocabulary study. I either focus on the meaning of word parts or utilize more creative means of learning words if studying for a test.
*Writing instruction is entirely driven by the student's strengths and weaknesses, as evaluated through the lens of the six-traits of writing. Conferencing, mini-lessons, student application of lessons, and authentic writing exercises are essential.
*Grammar instruction, also determined by the student's own knowledge, is aided by examples, counter-examples, creative mnemonic devices, and the application of correct grammar in writing.
*Reading Comprehension is driven by the observations of and analysis of each student's strengths and weaknesses. Though I have experience working with students who are having trouble decoding language (who thus need phonetic training), I am most comfortable working with students to develop good reading habits and developing critical thinking skills.
*Varying Approaches to Tutoring*
I can apply myself to tutoring a student with a specific writing or Language Arts assignment, as a supplement to the units being taught in a student's class, or as enrichment-- geared towards addressing students' individual weaknesses, as seen fit by my own assessments, your input, or a student's self-assessment.
For those interested in summer tutoring, homework and more intensive tutoring can be provided to whatever extent is desired.
I am open to meeting in libraries, schools, or in-home. I am also open to group lessons and have experience working with multiple students at a time. Overview of

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As someone with a secondary education and English degree, I am qualified to help guide students in their decisions regarding colleges before and after being accepted.

-Praxis exam for students studying to become teachers-
On the Praxis II exam (which includes both English/Literature specific information and tests the writing, reading, and pedagogical knowledge of the test taker--slightly more comprehensive than the Praxis I reading/writing sections) I scored in the top 15th percentile.
